Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlise.
Hi Charlise, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before I could really define it, I’ve always been a storyteller. It started early with journaling and writing short stories online, then to music, and now I’m exploring it through filmmaking and interactive experiences that inspire conversation. I’m still finding ways to tie all of my different expressions of storytelling together but right now, my journey has me focused on producing and directing my first documentary film, Living Context.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. A lot of my work is deeply personal, so there’s been a challenge in balancing creative output while simultaneously growing in real time. One of my biggest struggles has been allowing myself to evolve creatively without feeling pressured to have everything figured out. I’m still actively learning how to do the bold thing while scared and how to walk into the unknown without forfeiting my self-confidence, regardless of the outcome. I believe those experiences are what shape my voice as a storyteller and ultimately push me toward creating work that feels intentional and human.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a multidisciplinary storyteller that uses music, film, and interactive experiences to lead conversation and reflection within the community. A lot of what I create explores identity, emotional honesty, and the tension between performance and authenticity. I think what sets me apart is my desire to make things that people don’t just mindlessly consume, but genuinely see themselves in.
Right now, I’m most proud of stepping into filmmaking and being surrounded by an incredible team and support system that has allowed me to step deeper into my expression than ever before. The process has challenged me to trust my perspective more deeply and create from a place that feels both personal and communal at the same time. It’s also made me appreciate the inner work that comes with the production journey, and I hope the film inspires people in a meaningful way.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
A book that has helped me a lot recently is “Writing Down the Bones” by Natalie Goldberg. I also finished the 5 AM Club so I’ve been applying some life principles from that book, which has been pretty great.
