Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Martinez and Johana Gonzalez.
Sandra and Johana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started with wanting to have some decorations for the yearly anniversary celebration we have with some really close friends. Sandra saw a Facebook post with a video tutorial and we set out to buy the materials. We did a small set up and needless to say, it was TERRIBLE comparing it to our current work, but either way it was enough for our friends at Wink! by JS to point out that we could probably make it into a business if we’d like.
They are photographers and they offered a freestyled photoshoot if we were interested and if we created a backdrop for the images. We had no idea what were doing but we LOVED it and ever since we have kept improving and creating some really beautiful custom backdrops for different events.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the challenges we’ve had are to find a balance in the value of our work and our pricing. Even though we have found a happy medium on that aspect a thing that continues to be a challenge is out time management. We love what we do but Johana is a mom 24/7 and I have a full-time job which leaves us little to no time on some weeks.
Thankfully our husbands are very supportive and help on the weeks that we have to immerse in our work. As we continue growing we hope that challenge diminishes and that what became a hobby turns into a full-time job.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a small business that specializes in custom paper flower backdrop rentals for various events. We have also expanded to add a photo booth along with our rentals. We stand out because we were one of the first in the area to provide that combination. We are truly custom, the outcome of a wall or event is based on conversations with our clients and inspiration ideas they provide us with.
We are also unique because even though Sandra and Johana are the “faces” of the company our husbands do a lot behind the scenes and that allows us to stay ahead of the game. Jose, Johana’s husband, is our custom builder and the transportation department while Braulio, Sandra’s husband, is our set designer and is always there to give an honest opinion if our work is not up to par. As a team, we are able to come up with ideas that individually would not have been possible. We hope that will continue setting us apart from other business in the same line of work.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! Houston is so diverse so we have been able to connect with a lot of different people. If you are just starting out in Houston be prepared to drive to reach your clients. The traffic in this city is no joke and you can always find traffic even on the weekends.
