Inspiring Conversations with D’Carra (DeeDee) Harrison of Sacred Soul Beginnings

Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Carra (DeeDee) Harrison.

Hi D’Carra (DeeDee), thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into birth work began long before I ever called myself a doula. I’ve always been drawn to caring for others, whether it was working with children, caring for the elderly, or supporting families in my community. After experiencing my own pregnancy losses and difficult birth experiences, I realized just how important advocacy is during pregnancy and birth. At the time, I didn’t know how to advocate for myself. I didn’t know what questions to ask, what my options were, or that I even had the right to have meaningful conversations with my healthcare team. Like so many parents, I trusted that everything would simply be explained to me, and when it wasn’t, I was left feeling unheard, unprepared, and without the confidence to speak up for myself.

Those experiences changed the course of my life. I knew I wanted to become the person I wish I had during my own journey, someone who could educate, encourage, and empower families to feel confident in their decisions while reminding them that their voice matters. That passion led me to found Sacred Soul Beginnings, where I serve as a full spectrum doula and HypnoBirthing childbirth educator.

I support families through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, pregnancy loss, and infant feeding by providing evidence-based education, emotional support, and advocacy. I believe informed consent begins with informed education, and every parent deserves to understand their options before making decisions about their care. My role isn’t to replace healthcare providers or make decisions for my clients. Instead, I help families understand their options, ask informed questions, communicate confidently with their care team, and trust their instincts so they can make decisions that align with their values and goals.

My passion for supporting families also led me to complete the educational portion of Community Health Worker training, expanding my knowledge of health education, advocacy, and connecting families with community resources. That training has strengthened my approach to care and reinforced my commitment to reducing barriers and helping families navigate the healthcare system with confidence.

Along this journey, I’ve been incredibly blessed to learn alongside an experienced midwife (Deshaun Taylor LM, CPM, MA-MCHS) whose mentorship has helped shape me into the birth professional I am becoming. Supporting families within her practice has given me invaluable hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of what compassionate, family-centered care truly looks like. Her guidance has challenged me to continue growing, learning, and serving with humility, and I am grateful for the opportunity to support the families she entrusts to my care.

Building Sacred Soul Beginnings while preparing to welcome my own daughter has made this work even more meaningful. Experiencing pregnancy from both sides, as both a birth professional and an expectant mother, has deepened my empathy and reinforced why I do what I do. It has reminded me that no matter how much we know, every parent deserves to feel supported, respected, and cared for throughout their journey.

Today, Sacred Soul Beginnings is more than a business. It is my purpose. Every family deserves to feel seen, heard, respected, educated, and supported throughout one of the most transformative experiences of their lives. My mission is to ensure that no parent ever feels as alone or as powerless as I once did, because birth is not just about bringing a baby into the world. It’s about empowering families from the very beginning.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me into the birth professional I am today. One of my biggest obstacles has been building a business while continuing to heal from my own experiences. Pregnancy losses, difficult birth experiences, and learning how to find my own voice in healthcare all required me to grow personally before I could confidently guide others.

Like many new business owners, I’ve also faced the challenge of balancing multiple roles. I’ve continued my education, completed Community Health Worker training, pursued HypnoBirthing certification, worked as a caregiver, volunteered within the birth community, and built Sacred Soul Beginnings, all while preparing to welcome my own daughter. There have been moments of self-doubt, financial uncertainty, and wondering if I was doing enough, but every family I’ve had the privilege of supporting has reminded me why I started.

Another challenge has been learning that building trust and relationships takes time. Birth work is deeply personal, and families are inviting you into one of the most intimate moments of their lives. I’ve learned that success isn’t measured by how quickly my business grows but by the quality of the care I provide and the lasting relationships I build within my community.

One of the greatest blessings in my journey has been the opportunity to learn alongside my mentor and midwife, Her guidance has challenged me to grow both personally and professionally, and supporting families within her practice has given me invaluable hands-on experience. Having someone who believes in me while also encouraging me to keep learning has been an incredible gift.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change the difficult parts of my journey. They taught me resilience, strengthened my faith, and gave me the compassion to meet families exactly where they are. Today, when I sit beside a client, I don’t just bring my education and training. I bring empathy, lived experience, and a genuine desire to ensure they never feel alone.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sacred Soul Beginnings is a full spectrum doula practice dedicated to supporting families through every stage of their reproductive journey. I provide birth and postpartum support, HypnoBirthing childbirth education, birth planning, infant feeding education, and guidance through pregnancy loss, always with the goal of helping families feel informed, confident, and supported.

One of the things I’m most proud of is that my clients aren’t just given information, they’re given the tools to understand it. I take time to explain the “why” behind options, procedures, and recommendations so families can make decisions that feel right for them. I believe education builds confidence, and confidence helps parents walk into birth feeling prepared instead of fearful.

I also believe there is no one “right” way to give birth. Whether someone is planning an unmedicated birth, an epidural, a scheduled cesarean, or is navigating unexpected changes, my role is to meet them where they are without judgment and support the birth they envision whenever it’s safely possible.

In addition to serving my own clients, I’ve had the privilege of learning alongside and supporting families within my mentor Deshaun’s midwifery practice. That experience has allowed me to continue growing professionally while witnessing firsthand the value of compassionate, relationship-centered care.

At Sacred Soul Beginnings, I want every family to leave their birth experience feeling respected, informed, and empowered, not because everything went exactly as planned, but because they understood their choices, had their voice heard, and knew they were never alone.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’ve learned that some of the greatest rewards come from stepping into the unknown. I don’t think of myself as someone who takes reckless risks, but I do believe in taking purposeful ones. Every major step in my life has required faith before certainty.

Starting Sacred Soul Beginnings was one of those risks. I was building a business while continuing my education, balancing family life, working as a caregiver, and preparing to welcome my own daughter. There were plenty of reasons to wait until life felt “perfect,” but I realized that purpose doesn’t always arrive when it’s convenient. Sometimes you have to start before you feel completely ready.

Another risk was allowing my own experiences to become part of my mission. Sharing the difficult parts of my journey isn’t always easy, but I’ve learned that vulnerability creates connection. If my story helps even one family feel less alone or more confident in advocating for themselves, then it’s worth telling.

As a birth professional, I also believe risk should be approached with wisdom. I encourage my clients to understand the benefits, risks, and alternatives of every decision so they can make informed choices that are right for them. That same mindset guides my own life. I don’t make decisions out of fear, and I don’t make them impulsively. I gather information, seek wisdom, trust my values, and then move forward with confidence.

Looking back, every meaningful opportunity in my life has required me to step outside of my comfort zone. I’ve learned that growth rarely happens where everything feels safe, and I’m grateful I chose to trust the journey.
