Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Thueson.
Hi Mallory, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Mallory, the florist and designer behind Lilac and Ivory! I’m based in the North Houston/Montgomery County area, and I design florals for couples and clients who want their day to feel as personal as it is beautiful. For a long time, I worked in roles where I was supporting someone else’s vision and helping run their business. I loved the work, but I always knew there was something more creative in me that I was missing. Flowers became that outlet almost by accident, and it didn’t take long before what started as a creative hobby turned into something I couldn’t imagine my life without. Eventually I made the leap to build something fully my own, and Lilac and Ivory was born. Floral design has become the place where my love of beauty, detail, and creativity all come together, and every day I get to help people celebrate the moments that matter most to them.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been without its bumps! After moving here from Idaho and starting completely from scratch, I had to build a client base with no existing reputation in the wedding and event industry. A limited network, no word-of-mouth yet, nothing to point to except my vision for what I want to create. I’m still in the beginning, so that means a lot of patience, a lot of putting myself out there, and learning to trust that the right clients will find me as I keep showing up consistently. On top of that, there’s a steep learning curve to running a business on your own like pricing my work fairly and handling the back-end logistics that no one tells you about until you’re in it. It’s been humbling, but every challenge has taught me something that’s made the business stronger.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Lilac and Ivory is a full service floral design studio. We specialize in weddings and events such as birthdays, babyshowers, proposals, and more. We also offer sympathy and funeral florals, helping families honor their loved ones with beauty and care during difficult moments. Something I love is collaborating with photographers, planners, and stylists on editorial shoots and styled showcases, which gives us the creative freedom to push our design work in new directions.
What sets us apart is our range. We design everything from moody, editorial arrangements to elegant, timeless florals, which means we can bring our clients’ vision to life rather than fitting them into one particular aesthetic. We also offer pre-designed wedding packages in curated color palettes for brides who want beautiful, done-for-you florals without sacrificing style or breaking their budget.
I’m most proud of the personal care behind every arrangement. As a one-woman studio, every client works directly with me from the first consultation to the final delivery. There’s no hand-off, no miscommunication between departments, just one person who’s invested in getting your vision right.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have had many friends encouraging me for years to get started in my own business. They have been incredibly supportive and I am grateful for their friendship and support. Their belief in me means more than they probably realized, and looking back, their encouragement played a real role in giving me the confidence to finally make the leap. I’m incredibly grateful for their friendship and support, both before I started Lilac and Ivory and every step of the way since.
