Life & Work with Tam Barclay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tam Barclay.

Hi Tam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Canada from the UK in 2009. I managed to get exempt from taking the reals estate course by writing to the department about my experience as a realtor in the UK., I just challenged the exam to get my real estate licence and passed first time. I did not realize until I was seeking employment that I needed my permanent residency to work as an independent real estate agent. I targeted a company to work as a sales agent for them. They informed me they didn’t need another sales agent, they needed a rental manager. I decided to take my property management licence which took two weeks and they hired me immediately in June 2010. I ran their rental division taking their property portfolio from 35 to 125 properties over the course of 4 years. It was in the 4th year when i went on mat leave and was replaced by two people due to my workload., During my maternity leaveI received my PR and decided to go out on my own and work for myself. I became in 2014 an independent agent and property manager with a brokerage called Sutton West coast before moving to a more boutique brokerage called Stilhavn estate services. I know from my hard work and determination I have made a name for myself and my brand in the North Vancouver reals estate market and relocation industry. Clients find me overseas and seek my help in securing rental properties for them to move here.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been met with tough decision, hard work and sometimes challenging hurdles. Not being from Canada I had to deal with the immigration system, being rejected because of my nationality or lack of Canadian experience. Not being accepted or people feeling the need for a more comfortable connection even if the connection was not for their best interest. I still 16 years later have to show my capability and drive as rarely do things just fall in my lap. As a woman, mother and business woman I show my strength, perseverance and determination proving my value and worth. Getting people to trust me when people have other relationships took time but now I have the experience and network I have been looking for.
