Rising Stars: Meet Savvi Hue of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savvi Hue.

Hi Savvi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hailing from the north side of Houston, Texas, my mother is from Trinity Gardens and my dad is from the historic Fifth Ward community. However, I grew up not to far away in a section we called Homestead, named after the main street that ran through several neighborhoods in northeast Hueston. Yes, I made that spelling up. After elementary school I tested into several gifted and talented or magnet programs and thats when my world view opened up. A band nerd admittedly that was into sports but the music bug would not be denied. Ultimately I graduated from Booker T. Washing High School in their High School for Engineering Professions program. From there I attended and matriculated at Prairie View A & M University which is where my tech career began and continues to this day. The creative sprit would not allow me to only exist in that one dimension. Hence the birth of my inde boutique record label which is responsible for the critically acclaimed group H.I.S.D. (Hueston Independent Spit District), The Hue, Michele Thibeaux, Krystal Hardwick and myself Savvi. Most of my life, I felt like a black sheep. Not in a negative way though. I was highly in tuned with the sensibilities and nuances of my environment, absolutely adored it and thrived socially, however I could rarely limit my thoughts to any one space and time. I’m driven by curiosity, even driven mad by it at times. My career as an I.T. Solutions Engineer for several multi-national companies has afforded me the ability to travel and work with many diverse #huemans from various cultures. On the flip side of the same coin, my journey as an acclaimed music artist has awarded me priceless opportunities to cross paths with iconic #huemans who have pushed culture forward. These experiences are only the tip of the iceberg of what has shaped me. My ultimate goal is to create art that transcends space and time while celebrating the full #hueman experience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been more challenges than a few along the way. Being a true independent company with creative integrity limits your opportunities as I have been compelled to walk away from deals rather than to compromise. Income fluctuations and lack of capital is a tough road to navigate, but nothing is superior to full ownership of your intellectual property and likeness.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am mostly known for my work as a member of and defacto leader of H.I.S.D. (Hueston Independent Spit District), a Hip Hop collective based out of Hueston, TX. One of our projects, Summer Sessions caught the ear of Questlove of The Roots and his multiple endorsements put us on the map internationally. Our follow up project ‘The Weakend’ also garnered recognition from the likes of Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quests and other musical icons which has since made our art respected on all levels of the industry.

Currently, I’m co-producing an cultural interview series, called ‘my HUEston’ that is documenting Houston centric origins and coming of age stories. It is being developed for a longer form format that will be called ‘HUEston Chronicled’ commemorating my first music project.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I have a deep passion for fragrances.
