Today we’d like to introduce you to Britt Huckabee.
Hi Britt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was a little girl, I visited a local flower farm and my heart was immediately captured. In college, I became a florist and absolutely loved the creativity and beauty I experienced everyday. As a young mom, I began growing Zinnias with my sons, desiring to teach them to cultivate and notice beauty in their everyday moments. My sister-in -law started a flower farm in College Station and asked me to start some of her seedlings. I loved tending to thousands of seedlings everyday and learned all that I could from her. She has always been incredibly generous with her knowledge and resources and I credit so much of what I have learned over the years to her. During that time, my garden continued growing and my family helped more and more each year. Last year, my husband encouraged me to sell at the Tomball Farmers Market. The community has been so wonderful and supportive and we have continued to grow!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest struggles along the way actually has nothing to do with farming but with mindset. Learning to put myself out there and promote my flowers has been a huge learning curve. Thankfully, I have found so many amazing, supportive customers along the way. Every time someone stops by my booth and shares an encouraging word about the plants or flowers they bought, it means so much to me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Market Gardener who grows specialty cut-flowers in Tomball, TX. I specialize in designing arrangements and wraps using flowers from my micro-farm. I am known for long-lasting flowers, unique textures, and beautiful color palettes. What sets me apart from other florists is that I grow all of my flowers, right here, in Tomball so they are as fresh as you can get and change with the seasons. We offer porch pick-up orders from our website and are at the Tomball Farmers Market every Saturday.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Flower farmers are so generous with their knowledge and experience. Having a flower friend to learn from is so valuable. Even if they aren’t necessarily ahead of you, just finding someone to bounce ideas off of, who understands what you are going through and can help you problem solve is one of the greatest gifts I have found on this journey.
