Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Gertson.
Kara, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Growing up I always have considered myself somewhat of a creative and a bit of a dreamer. I’ve always known I wanted to do something more than a degree could get me, but was never quite sure of what that was. Upon my second year at Texas A&M University, I took a leap and signed up for my first photography class. Needless to say, I instantly fell in love, and my camera soon became my way of channeling my creative energy. What started as a gamble soon turned into a passion. I began expanding my knowledge on my own time by taking senior pictures for friends, and eventually took the step in launching my own business. Now as a junior at Texas A&M, I can be found spending my weekends capturing other small businesses, families, seniors, couples, and children. This semester, I have also begun second shooting for Kasey Lynn Photography, where I am learning the ins-and-outs of the wedding industry. I view each chance I get to be behind the camera as an opportunity to learn something new about myself as a photographer. The emotion of one moment that a single image can capture is what drives me and never fails to leave me in awe. I am young, and photography has already become my passion; I cannot wait to see what my journey in the industry will bring.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
While the easy answer to this would be to say that I take pictures, I believe that photography is so much more. That laugh or smile? I am the one that will be there to capture it. I am the one who will turn that moment into a digital memory that will last forever. My hope is that when people see my photos that they see more than a pretty picture. My hope is that they can see the raw emotion and energy captured at that very time and place.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
Artists today have to be very cautious with what they create and portray. As an artist, you have to always be cautious in what you are creating in order to not offend anyone or come across as inappropriate. Art is also something that can be seen as a great influencer. It is important to use the power of your creations in a tasteful and respectable way.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now I mainly share my work on my Instagram @karagertson and my Facebook page @Kara Gertson Photography. I also have my website, www.karagertsonphotography.com that I use to reach and interact with potential clients. You can support me by simply following me on social media. I share a lot with my followers from photoshoots to personal posts to Instagram stories about my day-to-day life. My goal is to create a raw and real brand so that my consumers can get a sense of who I am as a person and a businesswoman. I want to be someone that people follow not only because they like my photos, but also because they like me and can relate to me as a person.
