Today we’d like to introduce you to Martin Garcia.
Martin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Colombia, where I studied Business Administration and began my entrepreneurial journey at a young age. Over the past 18 years, I’ve built and led businesses across the entertainment, technology, and hospitality industries. One of my proudest accomplishments was co-founding Taqui, a ticketing platform that managed ticket sales for major concerts and live events, serving thousands of customers and working with internationally recognized artists.
A few years ago, my family and I decided to pursue a new chapter in the United States. Starting over in a new country came with many challenges, but it also created incredible opportunities. I founded Salt & Sugar Gastro Bar in Houston with the vision of creating more than just a restaurant—I wanted to build a place where people could celebrate life’s special moments while enjoying exceptional food, hospitality, and service.
Growing the business required resilience, adaptability, and a hands-on leadership approach. Today, Salt & Sugar has become a well-known destination in the Houston area, recognized for its unique dining experience, live entertainment, and commitment to quality. Beyond business growth, what makes me most proud is creating jobs, developing teams, and contributing to the local community.
My journey has taught me that success isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about learning from them, staying consistent, and always looking for ways to create value. Whether through entrepreneurship, technology, hospitality, or leadership, my goal has always been the same: build businesses that positively impact people and leave a lasting legacy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe challenges are what shape great entrepreneurs. One of the biggest turning points in my life was leaving behind everything I had built in Colombia to start over in the United States. I had years of experience, successful businesses, and an established network, but moving to a new country meant rebuilding from scratch.
Starting a restaurant in a highly competitive market while adapting to a new culture, regulations, and business environment required patience, resilience, and constant learning. Like many entrepreneurs, I also faced economic uncertainty, staffing challenges, and difficult decisions that tested my leadership.
Instead of seeing obstacles as setbacks, I’ve always viewed them as opportunities to improve. Every challenge has taught me to become a better leader, make smarter decisions, and stay focused on the long-term vision. Those experiences have not only helped me build stronger businesses but have also made me more grateful for every milestone along the way.
Today, I believe success isn’t defined by how easy the journey is, but by your ability to adapt, keep moving forward, and inspire others through your actions.
We’ve been impressed with Salt & Sugar Gastro bar , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Salt & Sugar Gastro Bar is an Italian-inspired restaurant in Houston built around the idea that dining should be an experience, not just a meal. Our goal has always been to combine exceptional food, genuine hospitality, and memorable moments in an elegant yet welcoming atmosphere.
We specialize in handcrafted Italian cuisine made with high-quality ingredients, signature cocktails, curated wine selections, and interactive dining experiences such as tableside preparations, live music, and special events that bring people together. Every detail, from the menu to the service, is designed to make our guests feel like they’re celebrating something special.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to hospitality. We believe great restaurants are built on people, so we invest heavily in creating a culture where both our team and our guests feel valued. We are constantly evolving, introducing new menu items, seasonal experiences, wine dinners, and community events that keep every visit unique.
As a business owner, I’m most proud that Salt & Sugar has become more than a restaurant. It’s a place where families celebrate milestones, couples create memories, professionals connect, and our team has opportunities to grow. Building a respected brand from the ground up in a new country has been one of the greatest accomplishments of my career.
Looking ahead, our vision is to continue raising the standard for hospitality while expanding our impact through innovation, exceptional service, and a genuine commitment to the community we serve.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I don’t believe anyone achieves success alone. First and foremost, I have to thank my family, whose encouragement and belief in me gave me the strength to pursue new opportunities, even when it meant starting over in a new country.
I’m also incredibly grateful to the amazing team at Salt & Sugar Gastro Bar. Their passion, dedication, and commitment to providing exceptional hospitality are what make our vision come to life every day. A business is only as strong as the people behind it, and I’m fortunate to work alongside individuals who genuinely care about our guests and our mission.
