Today we’d like to introduce you to Alanna-Marie Thompson.
Hi Alanna-Marie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I unfortunately was involved in a car accident that left me with a chronic pain movement disorder, Cervical dystonia and thoracic outlet syndrome. Crazy how a “minor” accident could change your life in an instant. I just recently graduated to be a Licensed Veterinary Technician and have worked at a practice in Houston for a long time. Unfortunately though, I needed a career change, healthcare jobs are hard on the body and I was on so many pain medications I didn’t feel like I was living. Bookkeeping was introduced to me quite a few times in 2016 and again in 2019 but felt it wasn’t for me. I kept my eye on it though. After extensive traction therapy, chiropractic care, diet and exercise I was able to get myself into remission and have my first baby girl. I missed so many of her firsts, never again did I want that. I knew it was time to bite the bullet and look into bookkeeping programs and see if it was for me. I listened to different introduction videos from different programs until I found the right one for me. I went back to school, all online at my pace. My teacher taught us also how to be our own boss if we chose that path. I felt it was in my best interest and my growing family’s best interest to give this a shot and open my own business. After completing the program I started AMA Bookkeeping and I never looked back. I was still working full-time in the beginning and found out we were expecting our second baby girl. It’s been a challenge raising a toddler and having a newborn but I’ve been able to grow at a pace that was and is best for my current situation. I’m blessed that I now do this full-time and we welcomed our third baby girl to the crew. My daughters are my reasons why and I hope to inspire them.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been. I learned a lot in my first year of business that I can’t help everyone. Working full-time and self-promoting myself was hard work. I did sign 6 contracts my first year though but only 2 I kept by the end of my first year. I learned real quick I needed strong boundaries, I needed my future clients to respect my time, and time with my family. I was a people pleaser and it became draining. I was burning out so I reinstated my rules and expectations moving forward. Those who didn’t value that moved on and so did I.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m a Certified Bookkeeper and Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor dedicated to helping women-owned businesses and real estate property owners/managers gain confidence in their finances. While QuickBooks is my primary platform, I also work with Wave, Xero, Patriot, Stessa, and Buildium to provide solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs.
I offer a range of services, from my Bookkeeping Support Membership for DIY business owners and startups to full-service bookkeeping, payroll support, financial insights, and budget planning. My goal is to help clients understand their numbers, stay organized, and make informed decisions that support growth.
What sets AMA Bookkeeping apart is the combination of technical expertise and genuine partnership. I don’t just categorize transactions — I help clients build confidence in their financial decisions. I take the time to explain what the numbers mean, how they impact the business, and what steps can strengthen financial health moving forward.
I’m most proud of the trust AMA Bookkeeping has earned — not just from clients, but from professionals in the accounting industry. Over time, I’ve built strong relationships with several CPAs who have seen my work firsthand. They trust the accuracy, organization, and clarity of my books enough to refer clients to me, and many of my clients confidently use those same CPAs for tax preparation and advisory services.
One CPA I collaborate with even handles bookkeeping herself, and she’s asked me to help lighten her workload, which speaks volumes about the quality of my work and the mutual respect behind our partnership. It’s a perfect example of collaboration over competition, and it’s something I value deeply. I don’t believe in competition. I’m not going to be everyone’s “Chick-Fil-A” sauce if you will so of course I find value in getting to know other bookkeepers as well.
That level of mutual trust is something I value deeply. It reflects the quality of my work, the consistency of my processes, and the professionalism behind my brand. I’m also proud of the supportive experience I provide, especially for women‑owned businesses. Helping clients feel informed, organized, and empowered is at the heart of AMA Bookkeeping.
I’m also known for being detail‑oriented, proactive, and highly adaptable. Whether a client is DIY‑ing their books or needs full‑service support, I create solutions that fit their workflow, their industry, and their goals.
My services offer flexible support for every stage of business, including:
Setup and training
Bookkeeping Support Membership for DIY business owners and startups
Full‑service monthly or quarterly bookkeeping
Payroll support and categorization
Financial insights and reporting
Budget planning and cash‑flow guidance
Cleanups and catch‑ups for businesses needing a fresh start
Whether you’re managing rental properties, running a service‑based business, or launching something new, my goal is to give you clarity, confidence, and a financial foundation you can grow on.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband, Francisco, and my parents, Tim and Carolyn. They’ve been there from the very beginning when this car accident happened that altered my life. I’m grateful for Kristin Ingram’s bookkeeping program and mentorship. I’m grateful for my networking groups as well that have helped me grow, learn, and gain meaningful connections and friendships.
