Exploring Life & Business with Zamir Rezai of Chopan Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zamir Rezai.

Hi Zamir , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My family moved to the United States in 2006 when I was in sixth grade. Like many immigrant families, we worked hard to build a better future. My older brothers and sisters took whatever jobs they could find to help support our family and pay the bills.

In 2008, my brother decided to open our first restaurant, **Chopan Kabob House**, on Highway 6 and Voss Road. As a first-time business owner, he couldn’t afford to hire many employees, so after school I would come to the restaurant to help. That’s where my journey in the restaurant business began.

Over the years, our family’s hard work, dedication, and passion for authentic Afghanistan cuisine helped us grow. Today, we proudly own and operate **Chopan Kabob House, Saffron Kabob House, Tandoori Kabob House, and Chopan Ranch**, serving customers across Texas. We have built a reputation for serving authentic Afghanistan food made with fresh, high-quality ingredients and family recipes. Every dish is prepared with care using recipes passed down through our family, making our food both healthy and delicious.

It has been a challenging journey, but every obstacle has made us stronger. We are grateful for the support of our loyal customers, many of whom tell us we serve some of the best kebabs in Texas and the United States.

Our dream is simple: we want everyone—whether they live in Houston or are just visiting—to experience our food at least once. We believe they won’t be disappointed. Our customers know the quality, freshness, and hospitality we put into every meal, and we hope to continue introducing more people to the rich flavors and traditions of Afghanistan cuisine for many years to come.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Like many family-owned businesses, we have faced many challenges over the years. When we first opened, we had very limited resources and couldn’t afford to hire many employees, so every member of our family worked long hours. I would help at the restaurant after school, and everyone contributed however they could.

As immigrants, we also had to learn how to run a business in a new country while adapting to a different culture and business environment. There were financial challenges, long days, and many sacrifices. Building trust with customers and introducing Afghanistan cuisine to people who had never tried it before was another challenge, but we believed that if we served high-quality food and treated every guest like family, they would come back.

Like many restaurants, we also experienced difficult times during the COVID-19 pandemic, rising food costs, labor shortages, and inflation. Despite these obstacles, we never compromised on the quality of our food or our service. We continued to use fresh ingredients and the same family recipes that made our restaurants successful.

Every challenge has made us stronger and taught us valuable lessons. Today, we are proud to have grown into four successful restaurants—Chopan Kabob House, Saffron Kabob House, Tandoori Kabob House, and Chopan Ranch. Looking back, every obstacle was worth it because it helped shape who we are today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
