Today we’d like to introduce you to A.D Hodge.
Hi A.D, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As I was approaching the end of my undergraduate studies in Theatre Arts, my Theatre advisor Dr. Truscott recommended that I pick up a career in Stand-Up Comedy which dates back to December 2015. By March 2016, I took Dr. Truscott advice and attended a joke workshop class at the Joke Joint Comedy Club owned by Ken Reed, who was one of the first owners to book and criticize my work. My inspiration came from many experiences from the countless times of childhood bullying, to even Maturing throughout high school and later finding acceptance as a young black man at popular HBCU meanwhile trying to find himself and love. Creeping towards the age of 34, A.D. Hodge has had the opportunity to host and feature in local and out of state shows for acts such as Aida Rodriguez (Showtime, HBO, Showtime), Damon Wayans (Major Payne & My Wife and Kids), Tommy Davidson (In Living Color, Booty Call & Juwanna Man), Faizon Love (Friday, Growhouse and 3 Strikes) Tony Woods (Bad Boys of Comedy) and Billy Sorrells (Wild N Out and Defiant Digital). Ranging from Arizona, Baltimore and Washington D.C. He has even taking the time to produce his own shows featuring other comics. Currently A.D. looks to continue and grow in the comedy entertainment business by attending open mics, festivals, and comedy workshops.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is smooth. I’ve slept at the airport, been underpaid after flying to a different city for a gig and even last-minute cancelations. I’ve bombed shows and sometimes used the last bit of my funds to promote my dream. I’ve lost friends in the comedy space due to opinions or disagreements with other peers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Stand-Up Comedian and Content Creator, I love how it challenges me to be better than the last show or video. I’m proud that I’ve headlined multiple Improvs including my hometown club the Houston Improv. I hosted for Damon Wayans in DC and Tommy Davidson in Austin. What sets me apart from others is that I’m always looking to find validation from the people and the bookers…. like a trail towards being undeniable from everybody…
How do you think about luck?
The luck of knowing people in the space being the producer, headliner or club owner. It makes life really easy especially if you’re dropping into town
