Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrinka Reeves.
Katrinka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I honestly believe it started when I was a child. I remember walking into the grocery store thinking I was there to buy a candy bar or a bag of chips. Instead, complete strangers—adults—would stop me and begin sharing some of the deepest challenges they were facing. Looking back, it’s unusual, but even then I would listen carefully and offer whatever wisdom came to mind. Then I’d simply continue shopping, as if that was the most normal thing in the world.
As I grew older, I realized those moments weren’t random. They became a pattern. Throughout my life, people have consistently trusted me with their stories, and I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to offer encouragement, perspective, or clarity. Sometimes those conversations have brought healing. Sometimes they’ve sparked joy. Other times they’ve simply helped someone see a situation from a different angle.
Connecting with people has never been difficult for me. In fact, the harder thing has always been not engaging with them. I genuinely love people. I love witnessing what happens when someone begins to recognize their own potential and steps into the person they were created to become.
Being entrusted with even a small chapter of someone else’s story is something I never take lightly. They may not remember my name. They may only remember a single sentence I shared—or perhaps they won’t fully understand those words until years later. But that has never been my responsibility. My responsibility is simply to plant the seed. What grows from it is often something much bigger than the moment itself.
I feel most like myself when I’m helping people heal, helping them escape the very things trying to destroy them, or illuminating areas of life they couldn’t previously see. Whether that’s through a one-on-one conversation or speaking to an audience, it isn’t something I decided to do—it feels like the most natural progression of who I’ve always been. It’s less of a career path and more of a calling that has followed me since childhood.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! My journey has been mo significant hardship, but I believe one of the greatest truths I’ve learned is this: it’s okay to be struggling, as long as you’re struggling in the right direction. Struggle doesn’t define us-how we move through it does.
I grew up in a home marked by domestic violence and became a survivor of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of my father. Some of my earliest memories, between the ages of three and five, are of watching my father physically abuse my mother, who was confined to a wheelchair. As a child, witnessing someone you love being harmed by someone who is supposed to love and protect both of you creates wounds that are difficult to put into words.
When I was five years old, my mother passed away. Losing her at such a young age was devastating, but what followed was equally painful. I was left in the care of the very person who had been abusing me. My home life remained in constant flux as my father repeatedly remarried. While there were underlying tensions of domestic violence in those subsequent marriages, none ever escalated to the severity of what we experienced with my mother.
If there was one thing my father did right, it was that he knew how to pick good women—he just didn’t know how to treat them. A heavy reliance on drugs and alcohol certainly didn’t help him do better in those areas. It took a very long time before I finally found the courage to tell someone what my father was doing to me. Ultimately, I had to bring a stop to the abuse myself, driven by the stark realization that I couldn’t risk getting pregnant with my abuser’s child.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Living in Houston has brought me a sense of deep tranquility. My favorite aspect of the city is the abundant sunshine, which provides an endless source of vitamin D year-round. While many newcomers struggle with the local climate, my Alabama roots have made me well-accustomed to the heat; instead, my biggest adjustment has been navigating Houston’s notorious traffic.
