Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhana Davis.
Hi Jhana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Honestly, I didn’t start out knowing that this is where I would end up. Being a doula, with dreams of becoming a midwife, was soooo far from my mind. I originally wanted to become a RN back in 2020. I graduated from Sam Houston State University with my bachelor’s degree in Public Health. After graduating, I worked in different CNA positions, from med-surg , cancer care to geriatrics and even psychology . Eventually, I started realizing that I just wasn’t aligning with these positions or feeling fulfilled in the way I thought I would. So I started to do some soul searching. I knew I wanted to be fully present and intentional in whatever career I chose.
Even before I knew I wanted to become a doula, nutrition, different diets, herbs, and natural wellness had always been a part of my lifestyle. I’ve always been interested in what we put into our bodies, how nutrition affects the body, and the different ways we can support our bodies naturally. So when I started learning more about women’s anatomy, conception, pregnancy, and birth, it felt like all of these different interests I had already carried were starting to come together. It wasn’t something I forced or planned out; it just naturally started making sense to me.
Even with my degree in Public Health, once I started taking a detour from nursing, I realized that Public Health had so many different routes and opportunities. I knew that I had this degree and this knowledge that I had worked hard for, and I didn’t want to just leave that part of myself behind. I started thinking about how I could incorporate the two my background in Public Health and my passion for birth work and how I could use both in a way that actually felt meaningful to me. I think that’s when I really started realizing that there was a way for all of these different parts of my life to come together.
That’s when I started having more conversations and doing research with my sister, who was vegan and had her own natural juice business before she passed away. We always connected over things like nutrition, wellness, and taking a more natural approach to caring for our bodies. I remember having a conversation with her about birth work, and she was actually the first person I ever told that I wanted to become a doula too. At the time, I don’t think I fully understood how much that conversation would mean to me now but looking back, it’s something I carry with me everyday She was one of the first people to hear me say out loud that this was something I wanted to pursue. She actually helped me come up with the name Amethyst Birthing. Amethyst is my birthstone color, and purple is now my favorite color . If she could see how far amethyst came I know she’d be so proud of me
From there, my journey into birth work really started to unfold. I became certified as a doula in 2022, and what started as an interest slowly became something that felt like a part of me. The more I learned, the more I realized that birth work was about so much more than just supporting someone during labor. It was about education, advocacy, nutrition, understanding the body, and creating a space where women feel supported, heard, and empowered through some of their most vulnerable moments.
That’s ultimately what led me to create Amethyst Birthing. I wanted to take everything I had learned through Public Health, my experiences in healthcare, my passion for nutrition and natural wellness, and my love for birth and bring all of those things together. Now, I’m continuing to grow as a doula while working toward my bigger dream of becoming a midwife.
Looking back, I honestly feel like I didn’t necessarily choose this path; it was a path that slowly revealed itself to me. Every experience, even the ones that I thought were taking me away from where I wanted to be, was actually bringing me closer to where I was meant to be.
Today, I’m still growing, still learning, and still figuring out what this journey is going to look like, but I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I want to continue creating, serving, learning, and growing in this space. I believe there is purpose in the work I’m doing, and now that I understand that I’ve been led by God to this work, I don’t take it lightly. I’m excited to see where God continues to lead me, and I’m just grateful to be walking in it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. It’s been very challenging, especially because no birth story is ever the same. Every woman’s body is completely different, and after supporting more than 20 births, I can honestly say that no two moms’ stories have compared. I’ve cried with moms, stayed through labors that lasted over 24 hours, and continued showing up no matter how tired I was because once I’m there, I’m all in with that mom. One thing I’ve had to learn is that natural birth is truly not for everyone, and sometimes a mom can have a birth plan that we’ve talked through and prepared for, but when she gets to the core of the moment, she may completely change her mind or choose a different path. As much as I may try to encourage her, ultimately, there is nothing I can do but respect her space, her body, and her decision. That has taught me a lot about being a doula and understanding that my role is not to control someone’s birth, but to support them through whatever decision they make. I’ve also had to realize that every mom is not my specific client, and I’m not necessarily the best doula for everyone. There are different reasons we may not align, whether it’s religious beliefs, holistic approaches, lifestyle, or simply the way we view birth and motherhood. And honestly, that can be hard for me because, as I mentioned before, this work is so deep for me. I wish I could serve everybody, but I’ve had to understand that I can’t and that’s okay too. Another challenge is the relationships I build with my moms. Birth is such an intimate experience, and after spending so much time with a mom and her family, sometimes I don’t get to see them again after that birth. There are babies I helped bring into the world years ago that I still wonder about. I’ll randomly think, “I wonder what that baby is doing now?” I genuinely hope that one day I run into some of those moms and babies again because those relationships mean something to me. Another one when a birth ends in a cesarean when that wasn’t part of the original plan, I can admit that I get emotional about it because I know how much a mom may have envisioned her birth going a certain way. But at the end of the day, I remind myself that my job is to be all in with that mom, no matter how the birth unfolds. I always show up intentionally, and my goal is to make sure we’re making the best attempt at honoring whatever birth plan or decision that mom has made for herself. Whether everything goes exactly according to plan, completely changes, or takes a route none of us expected, I’m still there. I think that has been one of the biggest lessons for me learning that I can’t control the outcome, but I can always control how intentionally I show up, how I support her, and how I make sure she never feels like she has to go through it alone.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Amethyst Birthing is more than just a doula business to me. It’s a space I created to support women and families through different stages of women’s health and wellness, with a strong focus on pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and reproductive health. I specialize in birth doula support, postpartum support, herbal wellness, placenta encapsulation, and education surrounding women’s health, pregnancy, birth, and the transition into parenthood. I’ve always been passionate about women’s health as a whole, not just what happens during pregnancy, and I want Amethyst Birthing to reflect that.
Herbal wellness is also a major part of my brand because herbs, nutrition, and natural wellness have been a part of my lifestyle for years, even before I became a doula. I’m passionate about learning how we can better understand and support our bodies, and I love incorporating that interest into the work I do while continuing to educate myself and grow.
What sets Amethyst Birthing apart is that I don’t believe in a one size fits all approach to women’s health or birth. Every woman is different, every body is different, and everyone’s needs are different. I really take the time to understand the person I’m supporting and what matters most to her. Whether she is preparing for pregnancy, navigating pregnancy, preparing for birth, adjusting to postpartum, or simply looking for more education and support surrounding her health and wellness, I want her to feel like she has someone in her corner.
I’m very intentional about bringing together different parts of my background and interests. My Public Health education, healthcare experience, passion for women’s health, nutrition, herbs and natural wellness, and my experience as a doula all influence the way I serve. I’m not there to make decisions for women or tell them what their health journey should look like. I’m there to educate, support, advocate, and help them feel confident and informed about the decisions they make for themselves.
One of the things I’m most proud of brand wise is that Amethyst Birthing has grown into something that feels like a true reflection of me. It started with an idea on pen and paper and a conversation with my sister, and now it has become a space where I get to serve women during some of the most vulnerable, transformative, and important moments of their lives. I’m proud that the brand represents more than a service it represents support, education, intention, natural wellness, and the belief that women deserve to feel seen, heard, respected, and empowered throughout their health journey.
Ultimately, I want people to know that Amethyst Birthing is about the woman as a whole, not just the pregnancy. I want every woman I work with to feel that I genuinely showed up for her, listened to her, respected her choices, and gave her my all. I’m still building and growing, and I have so much more I want to create within the brand, but I’m proud of what Amethyst Birthing is becoming and even more excited about where it’s going.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that might surprise people is that I’m a first generation college graduate and the first person in my family to build a successful birth business. My sister had her own natural juicing business before she passed, so entrepreneurship isn’t completely new to my family, but building Amethyst Birthing into a successful birth business is something I’m really proud of.
