Rising Stars: Meet April Fort of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Fort.

Hi April, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
People often ask how I got started in yoga, and honestly, it wasn’t part of some grand career plan.

When I was younger, I actually wanted to be a librarian. I loved learning, books, and creating spaces where people could grow. But I didn’t want to spend all the years in school that came with that path.

As life unfolded, I became a mom, and my biggest dream shifted. I wanted to stay home with my kids and homeschool them. I had fallen in love with yoga right after graduating high school…. found a book in the library funny enough. What started as a personal practice quickly became something much bigger.

Teaching yoga gave me the flexibility to be present for my family while still building meaningful work. It allowed me to homeschool my children, support others in their wellness journeys, and eventually step into leadership, teacher training, and leading retreats.

Looking back, I realize I still found what I was searching for all those years ago. I may not have become a librarian, but I get to teach, guide, and create spaces where people can learn, grow, and discover more about themselves. All the things you can do in the library. This one just doesn’t have any walls.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. But I don’t think the right path is ever 100% smooth.

If it were, someone else would have already walked it for you.

There are always struggles: raising a family and pursuing a career at the same time- it is never easy.

Your dharma—your purpose—is uniquely yours. It’s a path you have to carve yourself, and that often means navigating uncertainty, setbacks, and moments when you question whether you’re heading in the right direction.

What I’ve found, though, is that when you’re moving in alignment with who you are, the important pieces begin to fall into place. Opportunities appear. The right people show up. The lessons become clearer. It doesn’t mean the path gets easier—it means it becomes more meaningful.

Easy was never the point. Make it worth it, not easy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the heart of everything I do is one simple belief: we shouldn’t have to escape our lives to enjoy them. You can create a life you don’t need a vacation from.

I specialize in bridging ancient wisdom with modern life. I take practices like yoga, meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness and make them practical for today’s world—whether that’s helping someone regulate their nervous system or simply feel more connected to themselves and the people around them.

What I’m most proud of is the ripple effect. I’ve had the privilege of watching students become teachers, and then those teachers going on to facilitate their own teacher trainings, open yoga studios, spread healing further than any one person could ever reach. When one person learns to respond with greater awareness instead of reactivity, everyone around them benefits.

What sets me apart is that I don’t believe transformation happens during a one-week retreat or a single yoga class. Those experiences can be powerful, but they’re just the beginning. The real work is learning how to bring that same sense of peace, purpose, and presence into Monday morning meetings, family dinners, difficult conversations, and everyday moments. Your life is yoga; the mat is optional.

To me, success isn’t about escaping life—it’s about creating one that feels aligned enough that you don’t constantly need to escape it. That’s the work I’m passionate about, and it’s the thread that connects everything I teach.

How do you think about happiness?
A good cup of coffee.
My kids.
Hanging out with my husband over breakfast.
All the shenanigans.

It’s the little moments, those small moments are what make up a meaningful life. And when you start paying attention to them, you realize you don’t have to wait for the next vacation, promotion, or big event to feel joy. It’s already here. You just have to make space to see it.
