Rising Stars: Meet Monnyca Gammel of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monnyca Gammel.

Hi Monnyca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Flash Moments Photography began in the summer of 2017 with a simple dream: to preserve the moments that matter most. What started as a passion for photography has grown into a purpose rooted in storytelling, connection, and creating lasting memories. I’ve always believed photographs are more than beautiful images—they’re pieces of our lives that allow us to revisit the people, emotions, and milestones that shape who we are.

My journey has been shaped by both education and real-life experience. I earned my Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Communication Studies with a concentration in Media & Public Communication and a minor in Digital Media from the University of Houston–Downtown. That foundation strengthened my understanding of visual storytelling, communication, and the power an image holds. Over the years, I’ve continued refining my craft, developing an editing style and client experience that feels authentic, intentional, and timeless.

Like many small business owners, my path hasn’t always been easy. There have been seasons of growth, uncertainty, and personal challenges that challenged my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the moments we often take for granted. Those experiences reminded me that time moves quickly, people grow, families change, and memories become priceless. That’s why every session or event means so much to me. Whether it’s welcoming a new baby, celebrating a graduation, saying “yes” to forever, or simply gathering the people you love most, every story deserves to be remembered.

Today, Flash Moments Photography offers a wide variety of portrait and event photography, including couples, families, maternity, graduates, branding, proposals, dance, and special events, including weddings and destination elopements. One of our newest offerings is TinyHearted Moments for “Newborn to 1 Year” moments which include the “First Year Membership”, created to document a baby’s incredible journey from pregnancy through their first birthday. From pregnancy announcements and gender reveals to maternity portraits, Fresh 48 sessions, newborn portraits, milestone sessions, cake smashes, and first birthday celebrations, each chapter is thoughtfully documented so families can look back on the moments that pass by far too quickly.

As I continue to grow, my mission remains the same: to create an experience where every client feels welcomed, celebrated, and truly themselves in front of my camera. Every session is approached with care because these aren’t just photographs—they’re future heirlooms. They’re the images your children will one day look back on, the smiles that become treasured memories, and the moments that remind us how beautiful life once looked. Photography is more than my career; it’s my way of preserving the people, stories, and fleeting moments that become part of a family’s legacy. If my work allows someone to relive even one meaningful moment years from now, then I’ve done exactly what I set out to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any small business, the road hasn’t always been smooth. Building Flash Moments Photography has come with challenges that have helped shape not only my business, but also who I am as a photographer and business owner. As the years have gone by, I’ve learned that growth isn’t just about adding more services—it’s about refining your vision. From creating new experiences like The First Year Membership to enhancing the client experience, I’ve found that having so many ideas can sometimes make the path forward feel expansive and ever-evolving. Every season has taught me something new, and each challenge has pushed me to grow.

Alongside those business challenges, I’ve also faced personal ones. Living with dysautonomia has brought unexpected obstacles, and more recently, I’ve been navigating a new progression with my condition. Balancing my health while running a business isn’t always easy, but I’m incredibly grateful that I’m still able to do what I love. Every session and every event is a reminder that capturing these once-in-a-lifetime moments is a gift, and I never take that for granted.

No matter what has come my way, I’ve continued to move forward with faith, determination, and a passion for serving others. Flash Moments Photography is still evolving, and I’m excited for everything that’s ahead. There are many new ideas, experiences, and changes in the works, and I look forward to continuing to create meaningful memories while growing a business that reflects my heart and purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Flash Moments Photography was built on one simple belief: every person has a story worth preserving. Since starting my business in 2017, my mission has never been just to take beautiful photographs—it has always been to create an experience where people feel seen, celebrated, and comfortable enough to be themselves. I specialize in lifestyle and editorial-inspired portraits, weddings, events, families, motherhood, branding, dance, and milestone photography, all with a timeless, true-to-life editing style that allows the emotion of each moment to speak for itself. Every gallery is thoughtfully crafted to reflect not only what the moment looked like, but what it felt like.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a single session, award, or achievement—it’s the trust my clients place in me during some of the most meaningful moments of their lives. From engagements and weddings to welcoming a new baby, celebrating graduations, birthdays, and every chapter in between, it is an incredible honor to be invited into those memories. Every booking is something I truly cherish. Living with dysautonomia has taught me that every opportunity to do what I love is a gift, so I never take a single session or event for granted. When my clients choose me, they are trusting me with memories that can never be recreated, and I carry that responsibility with gratitude, intention, and my whole heart. Knowing that families will look back at these photographs for generations and relive those emotions is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

I believe what sets Flash Moments Photography apart is the experience I create long before I ever press the shutter. I intentionally take the time to get to know each client, understand their vision, and make sure they feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely cared for. My degree in Communication Studies, with a concentration in Media and Public Communication and a minor in Digital Media, has shaped the way I connect with people and tell stories with purpose. I believe the best photographs come from real connection, not just posing, which is why I strive to create an environment where every client feels valued from our very first conversation to the final gallery delivery.

As my business continues to grow, so does my vision. I’m constantly looking for ways to create an even more meaningful experience for the families and individuals who trust me with their stories. Whether it’s introducing offerings like The First Year Membership, refining every step of the client journey, or continuing to grow creatively behind the camera, my goal has always remained the same: to preserve memories with intention and authenticity. I don’t want to be remembered as just another photographer—I want to be remembered as someone who made people feel comfortable, understood, celebrated, and genuinely cared for. My hope is that every person leaves their session or event feeling valued, loved, and confident, knowing their story mattered and was captured with my whole heart.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality I feel has been most important to my success is perseverance in the art of preservation. Building a business requires more than creativity—it requires the ability to continue showing up, adapting, and believing in your vision through every season. There have been moments where challenges have tested me personally and professionally, but they have also strengthened my determination and reminded me why I started this journey.

I believe perseverance allows me to continue growing, learning, and creating with purpose. At the heart of what I do is the belief that every moment we experience is something worth preserving. We only get one life, and every chapter we live—whether it is welcoming a child, celebrating a milestone, marrying the person you love, or simply capturing a season you never want to forget—deserves to be honored. Some moments are years in the making, while others are moments people never imagined they would have the opportunity to experience. That is why I never view a session or event as just another booking; I see it as an opportunity to preserve a meaningful piece of someone’s story.

Success, to me, is not only measured by growth or accomplishments. It is measured by the impact we leave behind, the connections we build, and the memories we help people carry with them for generations. Continuing to push forward while creating something meaningful for others is what makes this journey so rewarding.
