Today we’d like to introduce you to Karin Broker.
Hi Karin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my story in a small town 32 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My studies took me to the University of Iowa, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Atelier 17 in Paris, France and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
My Houston Texas world started with my teaching at Rice University in 1980. And continued for 42 years where I taught Printmaking & Drawing. I recently retired to focus full time on my large scale drawings and 3-D works. Working hard on my art archives and my book, “notes of a mad girl”.
Although I have made many intaglios during those years I have always drawn. At the present I’m working on 5′ x 8′ graphite drawings on sanded plastic laminate. I’m nailing metal and working in steel.
My work focuses on my female tribe.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My road has always been constant and exciting while topped with a strong determination to make “stuff”.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I draw large scale on High Density Laminate. I nail printed metal onto wood. Boxes and 3-D works are a huge part of my production and every so often I throw in some forged steel drawing.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Movies seem to be the background noise for my work. I watch such diverse films and series that there is always something creeping into those pieces. I spend an exorbitant amount of time watching South Korean movies while working.
