Rising Stars: Meet Tyrell Brown of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrell Brown.

Hi Tyrell, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I actually got my start rapping at a family reunion. My sister’s best friend husband (I know that’s a lot LOL), an artist by the name of Dogsta The Problem, heard me going over some of my music. I always recorded, I went to school for audio engineering at Avant Media Institute, and just having a love for doing music and having access to record, I found myself playing around and recorded a few songs. Dogsta heard what I had recorded while at the family reunion, said he liked what he heard, and introduced me to a friend of his named King Bugatti Body. He ended up playing some of my stuff on his radio show and, from there, its just been up. I got such a positive reception to something I always wanted to do so I took that as my sign to kick things into gear.

I am where I am today is because I never lost my love for music. I continued doing live performances, connecting with other independent artists, being featured on their songs and just showing love to other artists at their shows. I can say that I am where I am because I always had that foundational love for music and performing.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. I say that with a caveat. I believe things are as smooth as you make them, being in the right head space, getting the right information, being intentional with how you move. That’s something I’m just now recently understanding. I feel like I’ve been doing most of the steps at different points along the way, but I feel as thought. Now I’m actually trying to get everything together. I did face some challenges early on, and even now. It’s mostly about understanding the business side of it as far as artist royalties, even something as simple as photoshoots, things like that. So there is a business side to this artistry that can be a challenge, a struggle point I want to bring awareness to.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My name is ColdBlooded Tyrell and I’m an artist. I specialize in bars and whatnot LOL. But seriously, I specialize in storytelling. I’m known for my music, especially local performances and competitions. I believe what sets me apart from others is the quality of the things I try to present and no matter the track, I’m authentic and encouraging people to be themselves, too. I try to take my time and not put slop in front of people, if that makes sense. You can prepare the best meal but if it doesn’t look right or it’s not appeasing, no ones going to want it. So I try to take time and make sure my meals are prepared right. That goes as far as getting my songs together, just trying to be the best artist I can be from my understanding of what an artist is. That includes moving morally correct, not trying to do bad business with people, and things like that. Standing on principle. As far as being proud, I honestly don’t feel like I have anything to be most proud of just yet. I have to keep working and work harder.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Trust yourself and find somebody that aligns with your goals. I can recall earlier in my career, I was looking for a manager. We were speaking through a 3rd party and what really stood out to me was what she told them. She said she didn’t really care about my dreams as long as my money was good. So, I would say try to stay away from people like that. Find somebody that’s aligned with your goals. Even if your goals might not be all the way flushed out, like how you’re going to achieve it. Sometimes, us as artists, we don’t always see the best in ourselves. Find somebody that sees the best in you and pushes you to that level. That would be my goal for finding a mentor, or that’s just for anybody in your circle. You want to be around people that want the best for you. Not “yes” men, but people that genuinely have your best interest at heart. I would say be aware and intentional about that.
