Community Highlights: Meet Mignon Thomas of Simply Coach MT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mignon Thomas.

Mignon , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Mignon Thomas, LVN, also known as Coach MT and The Resilience Nurse Whisperer™. I’ve spent more than 15 years in nursing, with much of my background rooted in mental health and caring for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

But my work today didn’t come from a perfectly mapped-out career plan. It came from experiencing burnout myself.

There was a point when I had given so much to nursing, work, family, and everyone around me that I had to figure out who I was outside of simply being the person who could handle everything. That season forced me to make some difficult decisions, rebuild, and get clear about what I wanted my life and career to look like.

That journey eventually became Coach MT.

I began using my nursing experience, mental health background, and lived experience to help other nurses recognize that sometimes what they’re experiencing isn’t a personal failure—it’s burnout, chronic stress, grief, or the weight of working within a difficult healthcare system.

Since then, I’ve grown from individual coaching into speaking, writing, nurse resilience programming, and creating the Nurse Resilience & Mental Wellness Experience in Southeast Texas. My work now focuses on helping nurses and healthcare organizations move beyond simply talking about burnout and actually create practical solutions for resilience, mental wellness, and healthier careers.

I often say, “Clarity over chaos.” That phrase really describes my own journey. I didn’t arrive here because everything went according to plan. I arrived here because I learned how to find clarity when it didn’t.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. I’d make this answer a little more vulnerable because it gives them the person behind Coach MT, not just the business.

It has definitely not been a smooth road.

One of my biggest struggles was realizing that being good at surviving difficult situations didn’t mean I was supposed to stay in them. I spent years being the dependable one—the nurse, mother, wife, caregiver, and professional who could figure things out and keep going.

Eventually, I had to learn that resilience isn’t just about pushing through. Sometimes resilience means stopping, changing direction, setting boundaries, and being willing to start over.

Leaving the security of traditional employment and building something of my own came with uncertainty, financial challenges, self-doubt, and plenty of moments when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions. I’ve also had to learn the business side of turning something I deeply believe in into something sustainable.

Some ideas worked. Some didn’t. Some rooms welcomed the conversation about nurse mental wellness, while others weren’t ready for it.

But every difficult season gave me more clarity about why this work matters. I’m not teaching resilience from a textbook. Much of what I teach was first learned through my own life.

The road hasn’t been smooth, but it has been purposeful—and I’m still building.

As you know, we’re big fans of Simply Coach MT. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
For this one, I’d make sure they understand that Coach MT is bigger than motivational coaching. Your distinction is your nursing background, mental-health lens, and practical approach to resilience.

Coach MT is a nurse resilience and mental wellness brand built around one simple belief: we have to care for the whole nurse.

I’m known as The Resilience Nurse Whisperer™, and my work focuses on helping nurses and healthcare professionals recognize burnout, regain clarity, and create healthier ways to navigate their careers and lives. My approach combines more than 15 years of nursing experience, a strong mental health background, coaching, education, and lived experience.

What sets my work apart is that I’m not interested in simply telling nurses to practice more self-care while ignoring the environments contributing to their exhaustion. I believe resilience requires both personal tools and honest conversations about the healthcare systems nurses are working within.

Through Coach MT, I offer coaching, speaking, resilience and mental wellness education, and programming for healthcare professionals and organizations. I also created the Nurse Resilience & Mental Wellness Experience, which brought nurses and other professionals together in Southeast Texas for conversations and resources centered around mental wellness, safety, resilience, and support.

One phrase that has become central to my brand is “Clarity over Chaos.” Another is “Pleasantly Uncomfortable.” Sometimes growth requires conversations and decisions that aren’t comfortable, but they can lead us somewhere healthier.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that the message has remained human. I don’t want nurses to feel like numbers, staffing ratios, licenses, or job titles when they encounter my work. I want them to feel seen as people.

Ultimately, I want readers to know that Coach MT isn’t about teaching nurses how to tolerate more. It’s about helping them gain the clarity, tools, and confidence to decide what comes next—and helping healthcare organizations understand their responsibility in creating environments where nurses can actually thrive.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
For this one, I’d keep it personal rather than giving them a long list of resources. Your faith, continuing education, and willingness to invest in your own development fit naturally.

Absolutely. The Bible is probably my most consistent resource. My faith keeps me grounded, especially when I’m making difficult decisions or stepping into something new.

I’m also a big believer in continuing education and investing in rooms that challenge me. I attend trainings, conferences, coaching programs, and business development experiences because I never want to become so comfortable with what I know that I stop growing.

I also learn through podcasts, books, LinkedIn, and even conversations with other nurses and professionals. Some of my best inspiration comes from simply listening to what people are experiencing in real life.

And lately, AI has become a valuable tool in my toolbox. I use it to help organize ideas, research, brainstorm, and turn some of the many thoughts in my head into actionable plans.

I believe the best resource is the one that helps you gain clarity and actually do something with what you’ve learned. I’m always learning, but I’m equally intentional about applying it.
