Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Tinney.
Hi Michelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Early 2025 I took a few American Mahjong classes. Became obsessed and could not get enough of playing. Quickly realized-finding somewhere and someone to play with can be challenging for new players. Summer of 2025 I founded Cypress Mahjong and created an Instagram with the intention of giving the game some more exposure in my community. This naturally lead to hosting events in the area. I have hosted Scored Open Plays, Leagues & Tournaments here in Cypress and surrounding areas. I love to see people coming together who might not have ever met otherwise. My events usually have a give back element with an local community needs group.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has mostly been a smooth road. There is so much excitement around the game that people are enthusiastic to be part of it. The social media aspect of the business has been the most challenging for me. I was just your average personal account prior to last year so I have had to learn fast how to use this for business.
I do enjoy posting Mahjong products I love, helpful tips about strategy in gameplay and general fun content that makes you happy to see.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been retired for three years. I was a pre-k teacher for 14 years at a private school in Cypress. I enjoyed it very much and use so many of the same skills still today. You have to be organized, have a schedule and a plan but be able to pivot when flexibility is needed.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Cypress is a small community with a big personality. You can stay in your bubble here if ya like but its not terribly far or complicated to get into the city if needed.
I would love for Cypress to have more upscale restaurants!
