Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Rivers.
Hi Jamie , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started photography in 2015, mostly doing portraits and learning as I went. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to grow my business, work with different communities and creatives, and take on projects that mean something to me. Now, I’m shifting more toward documentary-style photography and storytelling, using my work to capture people, culture, and the stories that often go unseen.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. There have been a lot of ups and downs, from staying consistent and figuring out the business side of photography to dealing with periods where I questioned myself and my work. There were times I wanted to give up, but I kept finding my way back to photography and reminding myself why I started in the first place.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a photographer focused on portraits, events, and documentary-style storytelling. My work is really about people and the stories behind them. I’m most proud of building my business from the ground up and creating work that makes people feel seen. What sets me apart is that I’m not just focused on taking a good photo, I want the images to feel honest, intentional, and connected to the person and their story.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
For me, networking has worked best when I’ve focused on building genuine relationships instead of just trying to “network.” Showing up to events, connecting with other creatives, volunteering, and being willing to introduce myself has opened a lot of doors. I’d also say don’t be afraid to reach out to people whose work you admire…sometimes a simple conversation can turn into a mentorship or opportunity.
