Daily Inspiration: Meet Ric Mendoza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ric Mendoza.

Hi Ric, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since I was little I have always been interested in using my imagination to create. I enjoyed acting in theater and independent film projects. I also have years of experience as a graphic designer. Working in film projects motivated me to learn more about the technical aspects of camera work. That is what inspired me to learn more about photography and understanding lighting, angles and different lenses. I enjoy the process of creating new images that catches a viewers eye as well as tells a story. I believe that I am just a storyteller at heart with whatever project I am working on at the time. It’s what fuels me daily.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not really been a smooth road, but I feel like that is what makes it a more enriching journey. I believe that we learn more from our mistakes and challenges than we ever would learn through effortless success. It’s in each challenge and struggle that we find our voice and our style. Some challenges are universal. Financial struggle, skepticism from others, and self doubt are very real early on whenever anyone is pursuing something that isn’t a perceived traditional path. I am constantly learning to improve daily on myself because I think we can always become better. I believe that as long as I stay true to my authentic self then the struggles aren’t a negative, they’re just a test to see how dedicated I am to creating work that fulfills me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I enjoy doing many creative things. I am an actor, director, editor, designer, and visual effects artist. But I feel I have gotten my main recognition as a photographer. I have had the privilege of working with so many amazing and creative people over the past few years on all different styles of photo shoots. My photography specializes mainly in fashion, portraits, cosplay and boudoir. I think what might stand out in my work is maybe the interesting angles that I use as well as my love of utilizing interesting lighting. I also enjoy capturing the personality of whoever I am shooting with, and I think that shows through the images.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I’ve grown up in Houston most of my life. I appreciate the variety of locations available to capture different vibes needed for different projects. However, if I’m being honest the summer heat is pretty unforgiving. So I’m always strategic at shooting at specific times of day, if the shoot is outside. But I’m always pleased with the final results regardless.
