Hi Tatiane, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Being a doula for over a decade now, I have witnessed the strength and faith of wonderful mothers as they bridged life into this world and grew their families. This alone has been a source of joy and wonder of God’s miracles in our lives.
As the definition of doula – a woman who serve- there is not other placed I’d rather be in a professional stand point, than serving, as long as these moms are benefiting from my work with them.
I am a devout Catholic mother and wife, I have graduated as an engineer 20 years ago, and the motions of live have brought me to here. As much as possible, I have always researched all aspects of both personal and family decisions. As a doula, I am an avid seeker of knowledge to benefit my clients’ birth experience – a very impactful, if not the most important, event for the parents and the family!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If this was a smooth road? Not so much. The biggest obstacles are the huge gaps between expectations and reality when it comes to everything surrounding birth. Doulas can’t guarantee outcomes but we will do the best to help communication happen; to make sure the decisions are made after true informed consent; that in the end the family felt heard and supported.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a birth doula, experienced in assisting high risk pregnancies, twins, vbacs, as well as hopsital, birth centers, home births. Doulas provide support in three basis: informational, emotional and physical support. It is a blessing to have all the medical support we can count on, on our days, but birth still happens between the ears, and holding space for moms to labor and experience the flow of hormones with confidence and a sense of safety seems to make all the difference. Michel Odent, a French OBGYN said about supporting women in labor: “The goal is to avoid disturbing her unnecessarily “. Having a doula support, may be the key for a positive birth experience, which in turn will affect future pregnancies in many ways.
I also speak Portuguese and it is a joy to work with families looking for someone in their birth team who speaks their first language.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
For doulas starting, feel free to reach out, I’m happy to talk as I have found it is very helpful to talk with experienced doulas when I was just starting. As in any work, we have to have a strong base (our faith, our family). Have our cup full before pouring. It can mean different things in different stages of life, but the practice of the presence of God never fails.
