Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Mata.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My beauty industry passion was innate. I don’t have a memory of when it first started, I feel like it has always been a part of me, like being able to breathe. I hear stories that my parents share of me that affirm the fact that I had a special calling for this industry since before I could articulate what it was. The first time I did someone’s makeup and hair for their wedding I was only 14 years old! My aunt wanted me to do her hair and makeup because she didn’t trust anyone with delivering the look that she was looking for on her special day.
My family has been incredibly supportive and encouraging on my journey, but alas my young heart wanted a college experience. I went to college and received a bachelor’s in psychology, but my destiny was the beauty industry.
Because the beauty industry was ingrained in my veins when I was planning my own wedding I wanted the creme of the crop artist that my freshly graduated from college budget could afford. The wonderful artist that showed up to do my makeup and hair on my wedding day happened to be the owner of the company, and she happened to offer me a job as an artist on my wedding day!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m sure you’ve heard the quote “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”, well that statement has rung so true in my career. I have loved every single day of my life since I became an artist. I certainly have had hiccups along the way. It was a scary plunge to leave my 9-5 secure paycheck to become a working artist, but at the end of the day, I go home with a smile on my face and satisfaction in my soul. I am in my element. I feel extremely privileged to live out my dreams and passion, and that fact brings me peace at the end of any rocky day!
Please tell us about Kiss and Makeup Houston.
Our company specializes in on location makeup and hair for all occasions. We have had the opportunity to paint thousands of beautiful faces from brides to celebrities, and are internationally sought out artist that. We have had the pleasure to travel to some of the most beautiful places on earth. Our brushes have traveled all over the nation to places like New York, Nashville, Florida, Las Vegas, and also internationally to places like the Dominican Republic, St Lucia, Mexico, Jamaica, and later this year we will be traveling to Paris!
So why do people love us? We are so grateful that so many of our clients find our interpretation of art to be deemed worthy of their business. Furthermore, we greatly pride ourselves in not only delivering a sought after upscale service but we are committed to providing the most excellent customer service. We want every moment with our clients to be a positive, fun-filled experience.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory was watching the women I loved in my life apply their makeup. I was in a trance as I watched the brushes dance across their faces. I have been fixated with the possibility of change that shadows and light can create on a person’s face since a young child. I would sneak away those lipsticks and shadows and try to recreate looks on my less than willing siblings until my aunts got wise and started hiding their tools.
