Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Kara Abercrombie Schultz.
Cassandra Kara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in the food and drink industry in the 90’s behind the bar and in the kitchen of several sports bars along the 1960 area. After a decade of managing and serving, I had to leave that line of work to raise my son. I worked in the oil and gas industry for another decade while always wanting to create new drinks, recipes and exploring other art. I have a deep passion for cooking and creating and everyone always asked when I would be their personal chef or have my own restaurant. When my son became older, I realized I needed to get back into what I love! In 2016 I stepped back into the food and bev industry by starting a small meal prep business from my kitchen. While still running my own family oil and gas operating company, I catered friends small events and I played with recipe development.
Then in 2017/2018, another creative soul and I found each other and started The Black Door Dinner Society, a Pop Up Supper club, the first one on the north side of Houston. We served themed, upscale, multi-course meals with entertainment and surprises. We promoted local produce and meats, hosted inside local small businesses, highlighted local chefs and talent. After our year-long project was complete, we continued our journeys in different directions.
My path took me to Caroline Cobell, my current partner. We now are The Saucy Broads… an artisanal cook team, food judges, catering and event planning, keto meal prep service, pop up dining and more. We provide our services out if the amazing kitchen in old town Tomball, TX but we travel throughout all of the surrounding areas for our customers. I thoroughly enjoy catering and providing meal prep, but pop up dinners/brunches are my passion. Come to one and you will see why. I love to promote local, promote hot sauces and seasonings. I am a lover of all things spicy.
My personal company, The Bomb Noms is a food blog where I share my recipe development, meal prep ideas and the sauces that I currently can’t live without… in my colorful pirate-Esque writing style. I also share this love of all things food and hot in the Facebook group that I started several years ago. “Do you even sauce bro?” Is where my spicy family of 1k members, can share recipes and promote anything saucy or spicy. I also make and sell gourmet spicy foods such as hot sauces, jerkys, seasonings and more. I will be expanding this company when I have more time. It’s my forever thing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is smooth! Some of the obstacles I’ve had were in the beginning… not knowing how to start. I was struggling to begin again.. so, I vowed to myself to just say YES. Not as insanely as the Jim Carrey movie but you get the idea. Instead of being scared to make the leap, try the thing, accept the big job, just do it!! That was when my first partner, Amber Keyser helped me get over that first bump. Together, we said yes to a lot. No fear.
Then, Caroline Cobell, my second partner helped me fix my second bump. I was hesitating On starting a legit business only because I had not found a commercial kitchen that was close, affordable and available. That’s harder to find that you’d think. When she showed up… with her own kitchen and wanting to join forces with me… it was the push I needed to get over that bump. There are no hurdles that I can’t jump with a good support system and a YES attitude.
The Saucy Broads / The Bomb Noms – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Saucy Broads is known for being creative, fun and “Extra”! We love to put a little “more” on our meals, parties and plans. We are the only Ketogenic diet meal prep service north of Houston. We are still new so we hope to share this service with more keto’ers as we expand Caroline’s kitchen. I am most known for being colorful and creative and I love to put some glitter and spikes on everything I do. I love to help, to serve and to give. We are special because we are unique and colorful ladies who can and will do anything. Pirate broads with a flair for the eclectic and flavorful.
I think our most proud moment was during Hurricane Harvey when our “team Tomball” was able to pool our resources to serve and deliver hundreds of people in need. The Saucy broads/Caroline’s kitchen was a hub for this operation and since we were not affected as much as others so we felt that we needed to do our part to help our community. Within days, we had organized and began to deliver tacos, burgers, casseroles, breakfast, supplies, clothes and more.
That made us happy and humbled us a lot. We live to serve and help. Community means so much to us. We only did what we could, but it made us proud to see what our team could do when rallied together.
