Check out Judith Thielen’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Thielen.

Judith, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have been an artist since I can remember, but I was never really sure what I was going to be able to do with that talent. I got my first tattoo when I was A freshman in high school..no, I wasn’t old enough…and yes it looks terrible..of course after that I thought it would be “cool” to learn how to tattoo. A lot of friends kept telling me I should learn how so I could tattoo all of them. I thought this would be a hard skill to learn so i wasn’t sure where to start. So, one day My friend adam asked me if I would tattoo him for free If he bought me a tattoo machine. I laughed because I had no clue what I was going to be doing, but I said he’ll yeah! Lol we went to traders village and he bought me everything I needed to get started. The next week I was tattooing him on my best friends bed….which I do not recommend at all! I kept “scratching” on pig skin and very good friends in my mother’s middle bedroom for six months until a friend Donnie mentioned Houston ink society and that I should try and get an apprenticeship. The next day I met with the owner and I’ve been here ever since!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I work with many different mediums. From tatooing, oils, acrylic, and watercolor paints prisma color marker and pencil and even charcoal. Honestly, whatever I feel like working with at the moment. I enjoy switching it up because it keeps it interesting. Of course I want to inspire individuals, and I hope I do, but I don’t sit there and try to come up with a message in every piece I make. A theme maybe(which is always different depending on mood) or i might just pull something out of my ass and put it on paper..I tend to paint for myself though. and I let the viewer come up with a message for themselves. Now, when it comes to tattoos I take inspiration from everywhere and I enjoy talking with the client to understand their story better so I can create a custom design for them.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I enjoy seeing Houston’s art scene grow! And i only hope they keep it up! One thing I enjoy about traveling is seeing the different art around the cities, I am excited to see that Houston is adding itself to the list. It is definitely motivating to know your city supports it’s local artists!
I do believe the conditions can vary depending on what area of the world you’re in. But now a days it is important to have art because sometimes we need to take a step back from the realities of life and Try and figure out how to improve yourself or the world around you. I do think it can be hard for an artist to present their work to the world because humans only know how to criticize half the time.. but, this is good for an artist, because this is was makes us better!
