Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Walker.
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to model. I grew up watching Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model. After getting hooked on the show, modeling became something I really wanted to do. I felt it was something unattainable as I grew older because of all of the restrictions to get into the industry such as height and weight requirements or just having “the look.” When I got older, specifically into college, I saw a shift in the industry. I said to myself “why not give it a shot?” I don’t want to ever look back on my life with any “what if.” I immediately started researching poses, agencies, photographers, etc. Anything I came across that pertained to modeling. I spoke to my family about it and they actually connected me with a photographer in my area and I did my first shoot! After that, I began to gain exposure and the confidence to reach out to more creatives for help. Now, I’m doing multiple shoots almost every week and hosting events to help others get into the industry as well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road. I’m still not where I want to be. Some of the obstacles I’ve faced were definitely location and financial stability. I attend college in Louisiana and most of my network lies in Houston. Louisiana, in general, has a very little market for the industry and I struggled to find other models and photographers I could reach out to. Also, being in college is always hard on your pockets. Modeling can be a huge investment so I’ve had to find the most thrifty ways to get things done. My advice to anyone seeking to get in the modeling industry is to be safe. There are a lot of people looking to prey on young women in any industry. Be wary of the people you work with as well as any one who claims to be with an agency and asks for too much info or money. If you feel uncomfortable in any situation, don’t go, to begin with or leave if you’re already there. I always bring someone with me if I work with someone new.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I am currently a freelance model, so I don’t have a specialty, but my favorite type of shoots to do are fashion/editorial. I actually don’t know what I’m specifically known for because I do a bit of everything. I’m definitely most proud of the previous meetups or “Instameets” I’ve hosted. A few years ago, I would’ve been too shy to even attempt to do something like that. I’ve found a fun way to bring people together and help those who are looking to learn more about modeling or reach out to photographers in their area. I think one thing that sets me apart from most, is my versatility. I feel like I can pull off almost any look and make it my own.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best piece of advice is don’t be afraid to reach out. I’ve found that just being brave has gotten me farther than I ever thought it would. For the most part, the worst thing anyone can say to you is “no”. As long as you are confident, kind and professional there is a good chance you may get the response you hoped for or at least some useful info. Other than that, the things that work for me are just being active in the community and research. Know when and where to be and know what or who will be there.
