Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonah Gonzales.
Jonah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My story starts with graffiti, that’s initially how I was introduced to art and being a creative thinker. I started when I was about 12 and from then on art was my life. I started taking art classes in middle school, soon after I was introduced to graphic design from one of my first art teachers. As I started to learn about graphic design, I also started to learn about photography.
My whole life has pretty much been a journey through art. I’ve never stopped, constantly pushing myself to think different and to go beyond what is presented. I am currently 23 but can safely say I have been creating for more than ten years, whether it was tagging on trains or making a fine art piece, I’ve never stopped and don’t think I will anytime soon.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
At the moment I am creating more “photo” based projects. My means of creating is pretty much photography. My inspiration right now is abstraction, minimalism, sports, and color. The problem I am trying to solve in my work is how do you perfectly blend these themes to create something visually in a photograph. I try to make the viewer see something from a completely different perspective. I would like for people to take this lesson into everyday life, I want them to start looking at things from different perspectives and think differently about what is presented in front of them in everyday life.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I may have a love/hate relationship with social media, but the one good thing that comes from platforms like this is the ability to network with people from all around the world. I have found the most success in just exploring outside of my comfort zone, reaching out to different people, even professionals. You can’t be afraid to fail, that’s the only way you truly learn and become a better artist. Just say fuck it and keep pushing yourself.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Right now most of my work is on my personal website — www.jonahgonzalesphoto.com. I am available for freelance photo jobs and design work. I haven’t been in a show for a few years due to my design career but I am trying to get back into the scene. I am pretty much trying to find shows/exhibitions I could get into and have my work seen by more people.
