Meet Jennifer Ramsey of Strategic Environmental Health and Safety Solutions in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Ramsey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I received my degree in Civil Engineering. I never truly did “traditional engineering”. I bounced around a bit at the beginning of my career. I did land development in Austin, environmental due diligence and property condition assessments for real estate transactions, forensic engineering consulting (investigative engineering… my favorite at the time), then regionally managed a traditional environmental health and safety (EHS) consulting company in Dallas. At the time, I started my career in EHS Consulting, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I turned a failing business unit from – $30,000/month into a $5 million/year operation in less than a year. This is when I learned I loved the business side of consulting. I moved to Houston about 10 years ago, to be closer to my family. I had a short stint at a small local EHS firm up in The Woodlands. I quickly realized that I wanted to venture out on my own. I had a 6-year-old daughter at the time… I figured I could spend more time with her and do what I love too.

It was at this time (2010), Strategic Environmental Health and Safety Solution, Inc. (SEHSS) was born with an initial investment of less than $1,000. Today, we are still a small corporation with 2 local full-time consultants and a multitude of consultants nationwide that we use on a part time/as-needed basis. We have contracts that regularly take us to over 60 cities within the US and St. Croix, USVI. We have always mainly concentrated on commercial, retail, industrial and multi-family property, but also occasionally work directly for homeowners at private residences as the need would present itself.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, starting any business is always a challenge. Truthfully, for the most part, the business was a pretty straight forward endeavor…work hard, be true to yourself, keep your word and clients will keep calling you over and over again. Consulting is all about building and maintaining relationships. Successful businesses are those that can sustain long term relationships….similar to a marriage, long standing friendship or partnership.

However, I had no idea what kind of tribulations would present is self in the fourth quarter of 2017…

Being self-employed came with the perk of working from home in Cinco Ranch in Katy. Eight years worth of client files, notes, records, training documents, equipment, etc tends to add up to that amount of time. However, when Hurricane Harvey unexpectedly flooded my home, it also flooded my business. In August 2017, I had to rebuild my home and my business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Strategic Environmental Health and Safety Solutions – what should we know?
