Today we’d like to introduce you to Liliana Serna.
Liliana, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always love photography, it’s been something I enjoy being able to capture memories. I was originally going to college for radiology, after a really bad car accident I had, I was not able to join the program with my classmates. I had taken a photography film class in college and had fallen more in love with photography. While taking a year off from college to heal I decide to do photography and find a college that had what I wanted to learn. Eventually I found the Art Institute of Houston and joined their program. I travel to Europe, Hawaii and many other places to build my portfolio for graduation, I wanted to focus on wildlife it was my passion. However, my college counselor wanted me to try something different, which I did. My friend from work had just had a baby and I decide to focus on babies and kids for my portfolio show. Well needless to say I won the award at graduation for best of show of my portfolio. That’s how I got into newborns, babies, Maternity and eventually families. It has been an amazing journey. My family is very supportive, they encourage me every day to do better.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I mainly focus on newborns and their milestones. I absolutely love babies it’s a gift to be able to soothe these sweet little angels. I want my clients to have beautiful memories of their baby something I wish I could have had with my own children. Newborn photography was not as big when I had my children 16 years ago, but I still captured every bit I could. I believe photography is very important, our kids grow so fast, it’s the only memory we can stop time with and cherish it for a lifetime. I am a planner, I need to know what colors, themes my clients like or hobbies. I then start thinking of ideas, buy props if I don’t have a certain item. I sometimes sketch my setups that way I know exactly what I want and need for my session. My kids help me with inspirations sometimes, it’s fun to talk to them about themes they really get into it.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
It seems harder now a day, many locations are getting banned for usage. More permits are being required. Social media helps with sharing your work but sometimes it doesn’t, with all the new changes.
If our city had more meet ups maybe, maybe an exhibition of local artists depending on their specialty, would be fun.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
