Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Lam.
Richard, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Kingwood area when I was in the 3rd grade from. The restaurant was built shortly after that in 1994 in Humble, Texas. It was the first of its kind in the Humble area: A Sushi Restaurant. It wasn’t easy to get people to adapt to this new food, so we had to open Chinese food as a middle ground, a buffer, to get these people to ease into the sushi. We, then, opened a Hibachi area in 2002 and have since expanded that section again in 2009. We are glad to have such wonderful customers that have supported us throughout the years.
When I am not managing the restaurant. I run NewTechWood which is a composite decking company. We manufacture our products in our plant in China and we send it to over 30 countries worldwide. We currently are selling on Homedepot.com, Lowes.com, Amazon.com.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It never is easy owning a restaurant. Everything has to meet a customers expectation. You only get one shot to meet or exceed that expectation, if you don’t they find someplace else to go. Now, with the internet people have many more choices so doing it right every time is the utmost importance. There have been more and more competing restaurants opening around our area and we must always look to position ourselves one step ahead of the competition.
Please tell us about Asian City Restaurant.
It is a Sushi, Japanese, Chinese, and Hibachi Restaurant. We are a full service sit down restaurant. We specialize in all the different cuisines. We are known for our big plates, fresh fish, and also the great Hibachi shows. We have some unique dishes that no one in the state of Texas serves, such as Vension, Sea Bass, and Lamb at the Hibachi table. We are always trying to innovate, always trying to do something new and push the envelope. I am most proud of providing the best possible service and ingredients to our customers. All the above sets us apart from others. We want to treat all our customers like our family because without them we wouldn’t be here. I personally respond to every review on every website regardless if it is good or bad. My thinking is if the customer is willing to spend the time to write to me, I should be willing to spend the time to write back.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Working as a waiter at the restaurant.
