Check out Christina Martinez’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Martinez.

Christina, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, I’m a full-time art student, and a part-time sales-specialist at a museum gift shop. I’ve been drawing since I can remember. Art was my escape, my sanctuary, from the world as a child. No matter where I was, creating something on a piece of paper gave me peace of mind. I was pretty awkward as a kid, I liked aliens, werewolves, everything freaky and weird, which made it a bit hard socializing. However, I was one of the lucky few who was lucky enough to be born with someone who was always there, my twin sister. We drew together, we raved over our favorite animes, and even created characters for stories we wrote together. We were best friends, but also each other’s rivals.

I love art and the art community in Houston. I am an active participant in different art events, both today and in the past. One of the art shows I entered was the Houston rodeo livestock art show when I was in middle school. However, my sister also entered and beat me, that just made me want to get better and develop my skills in the arts. My art was a way of connecting with her and now is a way of connecting with others.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’ve dabbled in a lot of different mediums: acrylic, sculpting and pottery. Presently, watercolor has been my main medium for the past four years. I love the loose and flowy quality of watercolors and allowing mistakes to happen. I paint everything- from my everyday experience, the interaction I have at work, to just a silly thought that crossed my mind. I enjoy creating, sharing, exploring different ways I can express myself through my art. Seeing others make art also inspires me to create even more. I hope they can relate to my art and get inspired.

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
The world is changing and that can affect us in good or bad, but an artist knows how to take that and make something wonderful out of it. Everything is connected and art is a way of connecting to each other.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can find most of my work on my Instagram where I post new work daily and be updated on art shows that I will be entering. I would love the support and it would be greatly appreciated.
