Today we’d like to introduce you to Douglas Welsh.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Miami and raised in Houston. When I was 10 years old, my family moved overseas. We lived in Oslo, Norway and in Aberdeen, Scotland. In 2014 I graduated from Bates College, a small school in Maine, where I majored in Visual Art. After college, I lived in New Hampshire and Oregon, before reclaiming my Houston roots. At a young age I felt uprooted. Painting and drawing became my internal GPS system, a way of placing myself somewhere, when my life was in constant transition.
Please tell us about your art.
Artists are like fish. We are products of our environment. A fish will grow larger in a larger body of water. Right now, I am in a small pond. I converted a tiny room in my apartment into what I call the micro-studio. In a world of bigger, faster, brighter, bolder, I create small, abstract paintings on wood board. I channel my emotional, spiritual and philosophical experience of the world into my work. Each painting is from a specific moment in time, where I examine and visualize my psyche.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I wake up every morning at 6:30 and go to the gym. I work out with my best friend and then I return home and paint for an hour. After work, I paint again, meet a friend, take a bath and go to bed. That is success for me, the ability to live and create work that is true to my experience of the world. When I exhibit or sell work, I share that success with my community.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
