Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Duplan.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been drawing since I could pick up a pencil, really. and I’ve been drawing clothing and costumes for almost as long. The majority of my young adult life was spent in Sugar Land, TX, although I moved to Natchitoches, LA for my Undergraduate. In college, I was determined to learn as much as I could and I discovered that being a Fashion Illustrator was the career path I wanted most.
When I moved back home to Houston, I began my Graduate studies with the intent to make my dreams into a reality. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but one that I get closer to every day. Houston was my home for many years, even though I no longer currently reside there.
I now live in Austin, TX, with my husband, and hope to make Austin as much a home as Houston was.
Please tell us about your art.
As a Fashion Illustrator and a plus size woman, I strive daily to emulate diversity, body positivity, and equality into my illustrations. I have created artwork for bloggers and plus size influencers, for advertising campaigns, and for fashion designers as well! The use of digital software has greatly helped me in creating artwork precisely and quickly, so that I can share my work on my social media the same day that I create it.
The Fashion Industry is constantly changing, and I think art should do the same. Fashion illustration often focuses on what the industry deems ideal, when we could be doing so much more! It’s a disservice to everyone if our art can’t represent everyone around us. Houston is known to be a Melting Pot, as is much of the rest of Texas, after all.
All women should feel beautiful and represented. There are calls for representation in media, so why not do the same for art? As I’ve been learning and growing as an artist, I do my best to draw ladies of other sizes, cultures, and colors. I call my work Body Positive, and I hope that my message is clear as I share my work with everyone.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
The conditions today are so intense! With the internet, especially, artists of all levels and styles can showcase their art online. It’s made competition exceedingly intense. Illustrators, fine artists, graphic designers, and others all work hard to make sure that potential clients see them. It’s important that not only do we have an online presence but making sure we connect with other artists within our cities is important too. We need spaces to congregate, spaces to show our work – whether in galleries or markets – and the opportunity to reach the audiences we need.
Houston, Austin, and even Dallas, can all do better by being more open with the Arts. Fine Artists have galleries, yes, but artists come in all ranges and styles. We’re a melting pot of ethnicities, so we should embrace that influence within our artist communities as well.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
