Meet Megan Silianoff of PopUp Shops

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Silianoff.

Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The prequel to PopUp Shops begins with my other company, Mad Meg Creative Services. Mad Meg is a boutique creative services firm that specializes in social media management, PR, web design, and branding.

Mad Meg has a lot of shopping center clients; Rice Village, River Oaks District, Kings Harbor, and Market Street are some of our biggest accounts. Through working on initiatives for these shopping centers, and other retail clients, my team and I became well versed in all things pop up shops.

So when I had an initial meeting with Barry Goldware (the founding partner of PopUp Shops and also the founder of Sun & Ski Sports) I had working knowledge and experience to contribute to the company he was trying to create. After four or five lunches I wore him down and he offered Mad Meg a partnership in PopUp Shops. The rest is history.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There haven’t been any devastating obstacles that come to mind yet, but I trust that there will be. That’s part of the start-up game and just life in general. I welcome struggles however as adversity is only an opportunity for growth.

Please tell us about PopUp Shops.
PopUp Shops is a “match.com” between “brands” and “spaces” so they can find, vet, and put on pop-ups with one another. As retail continues to be revolutionized by Amazon, e-commerce, and technology at-large, you’re going to see less and less traditional brick and mortar stores and more and more pop-up shops. This new era of retail is the context for our business.

I’m the VP of Marketing for PopUp Shops which currently means I handle all things public relations, social media, and sales related. As we grow, the context of my work will hopefully be focused but start-ups are all about being scrappy and I thrive in a convoluted environment.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in an Irish Catholic family with tons and tons of cousins. Time spent with them, at extended family parties, were probably some of my happiest times; Thanksgiving Day football games and whatnot. My cousins remain my best friends to this day.
