Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Jones Powell.
Tiffany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a passion for styling hair since the age of 4 from playing with Barbie dolls to styling Doll heads. As I got older I started styling my family and friends hair in middle school and high school. I started styling hair professionally in Montgomery, Alabama 18 years ago and expanded my skills in other places such as Columbus, OH, Mobile, AL, Atlanta, GA, and currently in Houston, TX. I always try to work hard at keeping up with the latest styles and techniques through education, hair shows, and social media.
In 2016, I decided to take my goals further by expanding my Brand into the Hair Extensions industry. When styling my client’s hair, they would always ask me how can they find good hair, what’s the best place to buy, etc.? And I thought to myself “Tiffany you should sell hair!” Lol! So it took me some time to research the best vendors, coming up with a brand name that was different but fit me and what I wanted to represent which was a one-stop shop.
That’s how I came up with the name HerStylez. We as women always say “I love Her Style!” and the name stuck with me ever since. My clients always tell me I’m Katy’s best-kept secret because there are limited Hair Stylists in this area for our African American culture. I feel God has blessed me with this talent not only to make Women of the world feel confident and beautiful but to Warm their hearts as well!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. In this industry, you will always face obstacles or challenges because it changes every day. Hairstyles and the techniques change daily. There are more and more new hair stylists coming into the industry.
So I’m constantly having to stay on my A-game to gain business of new clients and keeping my repeat clients. Prices are also a challenge in this industry because I do want to give my clients the best quality when it comes to their hairstyle or hair extensions but also still have a profitable business.
Please tell us about HerStylez Hair Studio.
My business is a One Stop Shop. I am a hair professional that specializes in Sewins (Traditional, Lace Closures, & Frontals), Quick Weaves, Natural Hair, and promoting hair growth. I also sell Virgin Human Hair Extensions in several different textures and lengths ranging from 10”-40” inches. My online based website is www.herstylezhairco.com.
I am most proud that I can put smiles on my client’s faces and this time of the year is always special to me because I get to glam the hair of my Little Ladies for Prom & graduation. What sets me apart from others is that I have the knowledge of not only promoting healthy hair while wearing popular protective hairstyles but also the knowledge of the hair extensions that I sell.
A lot of companies sell the hair but have no knowledge of how to apply it to their customers head or taking care of it while in the customers/clients head. And I like that I can educate my clients on how to wear it and maintain it.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would be my great grandmother always letting me put her hair rollers in. Lol! She knew they were in there any kind of way just had her looking crazy but she didn’t care because I was her spoiled great grandbaby. Lol! Looking back I now felt like she believed in me as well and knew I had a hidden talent.
