Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmeen Rana.
Yasmeen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My pole journey starts in 2009, with an average girl’s night out. Before meeting up for drinks and appetizers at Hotel ZaZa, I dragged a friend to a free introductory exotic dance class with a new pole studio. 15 minutes into class, I was in love! I loved all the different shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ages, and stories of the instructors. I signed up for classes on the spot.
I loved every minute of every class. I felt like I was home and that I could be myself without fear. My strength increased as did my confidence. I was so confident that after being a student for a few months, I took a chance and auditioned to be an instructor in 2010. I didn’t have anything to lose, just wanted the experience. And to my surprise I made the roster of these elite instructors.
In January 2013, I opened a studio with fellow instructor Jacqueline Santos after our home studio’s doors closed for operation. A few sleepless nights, a ton of long days, lots of sweat, grit, and gratitude have brought me here. We are still rocking and rolling at Revolve Pole Studio!
Has it been a smooth road?
Like any journey, there are always a few bumps in the road. Our first struggle as a business was finding our rhythm (no pun intended) and audience (again, no pun intended). Would people be interested in our services? Were we too sexy? Not sexy enough? Would we measure up to the bar raised by other studios?
Our largest challenge as a studio is educating the masses about who we are and what we represent as a studio. Given the misunderstood nature of our business, we have had a few struggles with certain organizations not allowing us to give donations or to offer benefit classes on their behalf. Expos and vendor opportunities didn’t come easy and we found ourselves having to reassure and educate at each turn.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Revolve Pole Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
The short answer is that we are a pole dance studio and offer dance classes. The longer and more accurate answer is that our studio is in the business of providing a judgment-free, body positive space for anyone that wants to explore pole dancing as a way to boost their confidence, strengthen their bodies, and join others on a similar journey.
We are known for our amazing variety of classes geared towards the everyday woman/man. We are also known for our curriculum based on safety and progression.
I am so proud of our instructor team. These women are incredibly hard working, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about the success of every person that walks into their class.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’m starting to speak to more women (and men) that 1) know what pole dancing is, 2) have tried pole dancing, or 3) have at least thought about it. I’m hoping that in the next five years, pole dancing will be more widely accepted with less stigma.
