Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Andrei.
Alexis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I knew that I was always different. I started painting at the age of seven and I realized that I looked art differently. I felt as if it was the beginning of how I was able to express myself without being judged. The painting has helped me through all hardships in life. I was diagnosed with Dyslexia at the age of five. I feel that this affected my current artwork because I visualize things shuffled, moving around, and backward.
My mom introduced me to Frida Kahlo’s art at ten years old on a visit to Mexico City. I found her art aggressive, sad, beautiful, yet inspiring. My dad died when I was eleven and I started to paint our household walls with murals. My mom wasn’t too happy.
Traveling and meeting different people and cultures has helped me tremendously in my artwork. I love my family and friends. They inspire me to start my day each morning through painting. I would love to inspire other Dyslexics to embrace their creative side. Because if I can do it, anyone will be able. Don’t suppress it. Bring it out. The hurricanes will bring it back to a rainstorm.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was scared shitless when I first started showing my artwork. Know who you are dealing with and talk to other artists. Listen to your inner self and be confident with who you are.
What should we know about Alexis Andrei Art? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a minimalist abstract artist. I lean towards minimalist color palettes and shapes. I stretch my imagination to control the chaos that ends up on my canvas. For example, I love broken down buildings that are about to be demolished and buildings that are being reconstructed. I also enjoy lines in nature and landscapes.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Women in the art have taken a back seat for decades. It is time rise.
