Today we’d like to introduce you to Karissa Hubbard.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Karissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a writer, when I got to college I gave up playing basketball to focus on school so I could become one of the greatest writers. After I graduated, I went straight to corporate America and got some cool jobs, but I still wasn’t happy. Writing about products just wasn’t making an impact on the world like I wanted to. So after being laid off and fired twice, I decided that would be the last time I would let people dictate my career. I wanted to make an impact by doing what I love and pay myself to do it.
So I came up with the idea for my first book “The Popular Girl” about a girl who creates the new norm for popularity at her school. I’ve had so many young girls tell me they want to be more like the main character and tell me how inspired they were. I’ve even had adults tell me about books they have been wanting to publish, and now they are moving forward doing so because I inspired them. I also coach Basketball which has been my passion and gets to train players and work with them to help them become better on and off the court. So my goal to make an impact and make my own money is underway. Thank God!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I definitely had some struggles along the way with getting laid off and fired, because you, of course, need money to make a book. It took me over a year to get my book out because I didn’t have any money because I didn’t have a job.
However, I finally stopped just trying to get a fancy named job and do my own thing and started listening to God and doing what he wanted me to do as an educator and a coach and then the road got smoother.
The Popular Girl – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business right now is my book and Basketball training. I am known for helping the youth grow spiritually, as an athlete and as a citizen. I’m most proud of the support I have received, I have people always asking can I train their child or I read your book to my class.
I think what sets me apart is just I don’t do this for fame or anything else but to use my God-given talents to give back. I have a hard time charging people because it’s bigger than money to me.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
At my book signing, a young lady that was in 7th grade showed up because she saw my post on Instagram and wanted to get a book. She later told me that my book has inspired her and she loved it! It wasn’t a family member or a friend, but a complete stranger that believed in my dream.
