Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosanna Lopez and Veronica Moya.
Rosanna and Veronica, please share your story with us.
We started considering small business loans but were being turned down left and right. Our mother, who saw how much we had struggled to turn our dream’s into reality, offered her entire savings of $20,000 to invest in our dream. We now had the plan and the funding so there was no turning back or failing. In our last year of the Masters Family Nurse Practitioner Program with a certificate in Nursing Education, we opened our one (1) room spa. We poured all our heart and soul into Elixir Med Spa, and it had shown. In our first year, we have grown from fifty (50) consistent patients to over seven hundred (700). We have grown from a one (1) room spa to four (4) room spa, with expansion to our own freestanding build out coming in August 2018.
We had many supporters who helped us along this journey. Myself and my sister have been married to our high school sweethearts for over 18 years. Our husbands thought we were kind of crazy, but they supported us in our amazing/crazy adventure. Our mother has been one of our biggest cheerleaders and knew that we had the ability to work hard and make anything we put our minds to a success.
Please tell us about Elixir Med Spa.
Elixir Med Spa is a family owned business that started with 2 sisters that left their positions as ER nurses to venture into the world of Aesthetics. Rosanna, RN starting working at a small medical spa and within 6mths ventured out on her own. She started working as a mobile concierge Botox injector and attended training with Allergan and Galderma to achieve Advanced Injector. Veronica, RN had a passion for Laser Technology and focused all her attention on gaining all the knowledge she could. She excelled at the level of Laser Professional in a very short amount of time. One of their clients worked for Texas Laser Institute and forward her name to the Owner who was looking for an instructor in Injectables. After multiple interviews, she obtained the position and has trained MDs, DDO, NP, and RNs in the art of injectable. During this time, they met their future Medical Director: Dr. Alejandra Palmeros-Irvine. After success with mobile concierge, Rosanna and Verto take a leap of faith to start a full-time business in Aesthetics.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We struggled with balancing our work, school and personal life. Being women we are expected to balance being a wife, mother, caretaker, and entrepreneurs. If that was not hard enough we added being a graduate student into the equation. It was very difficult!
There were many nights we began to second guess the sacrifice we were making to be entrepreneurs. As entrepreneurs, we did not have an income coming in and it definitely was felt in the household. There were plenty of nights that we did not see our families and our husbands were picking up the slack in our absence. We were committed to making this idea work and did whatever it took. We stayed long hours and we never said no to a client in order to get that one extra appointment booked. We had to stay positive but also very realistic about the projection of growth and stay the course. Slowly there was an upturn in growth and we were staying in the black month to month.
The advice we will give to young women who are starting their journey is to have an Idea and Commit to making your idea work, and DO WHATEVER IT TAKES. By definition, an entrepreneur is a person who organizes and operates a business, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. Take calculated risks and know that payoff will be worth it. “Think big and don’t listen to people who tell you it can’t be done. Life’s too short to think small” – Tim Ferriss. Create your own path and don’t compare yourself to anyone, just do what you do best.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
We believe that biggest obstacle women face is gender-role barriers in general. As women, the idea of being an entrepreneur and leader is always in question due to gender-roles that are continually being pushed upon us. We are forward thinking women and paving the way to our own success without the acknowledgment of preconceived notions or roles being placed on us. We have been very blessed to be mentored by some amazing forward thinking women. Our mother taught us at a very young age to be hard working independent women. She expressed to us the value of being feminine but also tough. She embedded into our brain that a women’s place was not at home but alongside the men in the world chasing their dreams. We were never taught to think small but to think BIG. Along with our journey, we were given the opportunity to be mentored by Dr. Alejandra Palmeros-Irvine and Mari Carrasco. As women, they understand and know the difficulties of having the work and life balance. For women, we believe it is important to empower one another and help more women reach their goals. Our mother Emilia Casillas, Dr. Palmeros-Irvine, and Mari Carrasco gave us opportunities to grow our business and continue to motivate us to keep striving for the best version of ourselves.
