Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Gutierrez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Carolina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a payroll clerk for almost 10 years but was never really happy. After my son was born and being diagnosed with severe postpartum depression and anxiety, I finally decided to quit to find some kind of tranquility. A year and half passed by and I was only getting worse. Thankfully, my older sister noticed that my mood and overall health changed when I was doing makeup. I reluctantly searched for beauty schools in my area and the first one that I contacted is the one that I went with and I’ve never been happier. I graduated from Touch Makeup Academy in January of 2017 and only blessings have come my way. I have had the opportunity to work with Good Morning America (Super Bowl LI) of the same year, as well as countless fashion shows, Channel 13 News, Great Day Houston, charity events and most recently an ad campaign commercial. I have also received certification from Glam Lab this past April. While there are still some dark days, becoming a professional makeup artist has truly saved me in more ways than one.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Most definitely not a smooth road at all for me. Not only did I have to get past my insecurities but I also had to remember that I was going to hear several No’s before one Yes. I definitely understand the phrase “starving artist” now more than ever. I’ve done a lot of free makeup overs so that I can build my portfolio as well as working for free as an apprentice to gain exposure and experience. My advice is simple: Just don’t ever give up.
We’d love to hear more about Radiant Beauty MUA.
I am a professional makeup artist and specialize in bridal, beauty, and TV makeup applications.
I am most proud of seeing clients’ reactions at the end of their sessions. The gasps and sometimes happy tears are what I search for when working with anyone.
I feel that what sets me apart is that when clients hear my story during our conversations, they feel more at ease knowing that I surpassed my struggles and now I transfer my happiness onto them via some makeup brushes.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Just do not ever give up. And most definitely, do not take any fallbacks as a reflection of their success. One will fail several times before finding that one path that leads to success.
