Today we’d like to introduce you to Phylo Darke.
Phylo, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1995, two friends who met at Rice Univ. decided to make a film. The easiest genre for a B movie was horror. After months of makeup tests and screenshots, the film morphed into a haunted house. In 1996 Phobia was born. Now located on Beltway 8 South off 288, Phobia will have 8 attractions in 2017. Employing hundreds of actors and even more animatronics. Open weekends in October.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The only issues Phobia has had were struggles with Government. In 2014, TXDOT ceased our land on 290, for highway construction, and we moved to Beltway 8. City of Houston Permits, for the new haunted house construction, have been challenging, taking years to process.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Phobia is the largest, most intense Haunted House complex in the city. Hundreds of actors, countless scares at every turn.
What were you like growing up?
I am just a manager. I had a quiet life in prep school, but…the creativity comes from our multi-person development team. We have a dedicated art director, fabricator, construction crew and management team. They are second to none, having decades experience in the business. They each specialize in every facet of design, construction and running our seasonal venue.
