Joella, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began this journey over a decade ago, only as a part-time job, while managing a corporation full time. While I have always had a passion for hair and makeup, my full-time job monopolized my time. I’ve spent many years training and admiring fellow artists in the industry who were able to make a living, doing what I longed to do for so many years. And then, the unthinkable happened! The corporation that I had dedicated over a decade of my life to, decided to take the business in a different direction; which meant I was also forced to do the same. Thankfully, because I was actively involved in the bridal industry (even though it was only part-time) and had met so many wonderful people over the years, I was able to transition into becoming a full-time bridal hair and makeup artist in no time. As I reflect on my journey, I truly believe it was a blessing in disguise and now that I am able to fulfill my life-long dream and passion, I am forever grateful!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey has not always been easy. There were some challenges I faced early on that caused me to question if I should pursue this as a career. Believe me; I made several mistakes along the way. But it’s all a part of the process and growth. With on-going training and dedication, you can persevere!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with BLUSH Hair & Makeup Artistry – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in bridal hairstyling and makeup services. I am most known for providing luxury bridal hairstyling and makeup services. While there are many great artists in the industry, there seem to be only a few local bridal artists that specialize in both bridal hairstyling and makeup. I believe that’s what sets me and my company apart from others.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel that there are several opportunities that women, in particular, are well positioned for. We are all given the same 24 hours in a day; what we decide to do with that time, will make the difference. Although opportunities are given, I truly believe it must be matched by effort. With hard work, dedication, and perseverance, there is nothing that we can’t accomplish!
