Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Handy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A few years ago, I was a woman in my early 40s who began to notice subtle but visible changes with my skin. Dryness, pigmentation and that wrinkle that wouldn’t go away. For years it was flawless. Now, things were changing and I needed to put in more effort. I stumbled across a twitter chat one day and the host was talking about how she was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor. Her doctor said it was more than likely environmental. She shared how she replaced all of her beauty products with natural ones and how this prompted her to create her own natural skin care line. For the very first time I was hearing about toxic, harmful chemicals in beauty products, with potentially cancer-causing ingredients that consumers were using every day. I was shocked. How could this be? If it’s on the shelf and for sale, surely it must be safe, right? Why were consumers being put at risk? Shortly thereafter, I started my entrepreneur journey as a certified and professionally trained organic skin care formulator, creating carefully curated skin care products using the best ingredients sourced from all over the world. I’m NOT a self-taught DIYer. In July 2014, the GlammGirl brand made its debut and launched a natural skin care line at the beautiful Kate Spade – New York Boutique in Houston, Texas. This was just the beginning of an adventure full of excitement and uncertainties. Fast forward to today, the GlammGirl brand has evolved into a very special and unique, “real life” LIFESTYLE brand. I’ve never lost sight of my commitment to providing the best in organic and natural beauty products. I’ve simply expanded the brand and integrated the subtle luxuries that bring me joy and we want to share that with YOU. My hope is to inspire other creatives and indie makers of luxurious beauty and lifestyle brands.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey has not been a smooth one. My biggest struggle has been overcoming the fear of how others would judge me and if I would be taken seriously and viewed as credible. My background is in Social Services and Education not chemistry or science. So being known as a Skin Care Formulator was very different and took some getting used to. I also struggled with wanting to accommodate the masses. Trying to be everything to everyone proved to be exhausting. It took me awhile to narrow down my niche and enjoy the process at the same time.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the GlammGirl story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m the Creator and Owner of my company GlammGirl. I specialize in offering products that attract women and different aspects of their lives. I’m known for being multi-passionate. I was not satisfied with just offering skin care. The beauty industry is a billion-dollar global industry and it’s saturated with skin care brands. I wanted to give women great skin care they need, a little edible luxury for fun with our authentic wine gummy bears, and the ultimate feminine candle that I personally make myself. These luxuries are simple and uncomplicated and women love them. As a company, I’m most proud of being able to serve my customers by being authentic, relevant and responsive what they want and need. This is also what sets me apart from others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The role of luck (good or bad) has played no part in my business. I believe that we all live and die by the choices we make. Everything that has happened in my business was a result of choices I made, good or bad.
