Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Ricks.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
It all started when I was living in Australia and discovered the local wildlife, I always thought reptiles were just amazingly gorgeous creatures. It wasn’t for almost 10 years later that I started photographing them.
Please tell us about your art.
My art heavily revolves around reptiles and animals in general. With a large focus being on contrasting colors lately. My hope for it is to better educate people on what amazing wildlife we have on this planet, and to show snakes aren’t as scary as we were taught growing up.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
It depends on the medium honestly. I still love exploring the city to see all the street art, there’s so many talented people in this city. It’s become more accepted I think, you can have creative control over almost all aspects of it these days. I honestly think Houston itself already helps artists thrive, it’s one of the coolest cities I’ve ever lived it.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I use my personal Facebook and Instagram for most of it. I also vend reptile shows such as HERPS with photo prints of what I’ve taken. It’s been a weird transition into selling actual prints.

Some folks say that to be a real artist, you must have a tortured soul. If that is truly the case, then we can rest easy knowing that Brandon is a real artist. This is no insult as to be tortured in the sense of an artists, you must have a thoughtful and compassionate heart. He may not know it, but the impact of his personality can leave a lasting impression on those he has only been briefly acquainted with. In some cases that might seem a curse, but I can personally attest to it being a gift. Thanks for the inspiration Brandon.
