Today we’d like to introduce you to Ilan Feld.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduating with a Masters in International Studies from the University of Denver, I was in the middle of finding my way when an encounter with an interesting spiritual person got me interested in the study of massage therapy. At that time, I have never even had a massage before and I never put much thought into the human body or how it functions. I went to study at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy which was considered one of the top massage schools. I immediately felt connected to this work and felt I had found my true calling. Upon graduation in 2002, I moved to London UK and started my practice. My passion and expertise in neuromuscular massage started to pay off quickly, I had built a following that included pro athletes as well as many high profile clients from the film, music and arts industry. I moved to Houston after I met my future wife who was a musician at Houston Grand Opera. Although I had reservations to leave my practice in London behind, I was amazed by the diversity and opportunity Houston had to offer. Six months after moving to Houston, I found a little commercial space on Blossom Street and Blossom Massage was born in October 2007. The client response was phenomenal. At the time, I was the only therapist and I was working seven days a week. We just kept growing with repeat clients and referrals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We suffered a huge setback about a year after we opened our original location. Hurricane Ike ripped through Houston and gifted us with a huge tree through the middle of our office. We lost most equipments and had to start over to re-build the business from scratch. We never were able to move back to the office; the building was demolished shortly after. We were lucky to find a place nearby, signed a new lease and began repainting, decorating and re-furnishing new equipment for the space. The place was much bigger, the rent much higher, and we didn’t know if we could pull it off – but sometimes you have to believe in the potential and take risks. Our clients were extremely gracious and started to come again even as renovations were still underway. As we were getting back on track, the housing and stock market crash created some additional worries and turbulence but Blossom was staying stable and persevered. We hired a second therapist and soon after the next ones followed. After several years, we outgrew the house and moved into our new space on Durham Street in November 2013. We expanded our hours, our staff grew to 13 massage therapists and we even added a full-time esthetician to provide skincare services.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Blossom Massage – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Blossom Massage is in the Washington Avenue Corridor centrally located near the Heights/Garden Oaks, Midtown/Montrose and Downtown areas of Houston. We have created what we believe to be an urban oasis for our clients — a modern and tranquil escape dedicated to client health and wellness including massage, skincare services and organic gift shop. We make scheduling a breeze, and front desk staff will make you feel at ease taking care to ensure that you and your therapist are a match made in health. Our highly experienced staff takes great care to personalize your session based on your needs. Each of our therapists are expertly trained so we offer our clients highly personalized services with a wide range of styles including deep tissue and sports therapy, traditional and Eastern massage techniques.
I am proud of the team we have in place, and I believe that each one of them is the best Houston has to offer. We know our staff is an extension of our reputation and business so we offer top conditions and compensation for our staff, we promote an “all for one team” environment and we believe in treating each other with great respect and care.
On the client side, we stray from the typical massage/day spa experience by offering true hour-long massages, and we pride ourselves in no hidden/extra fees for services like sports or deep tissue, prenatal, aromatherapy or heated stones. We are open 7 days a week and there is never any sales pressure after a session, our focus is always on your treatment. Blossom has been consistently recognized as a top massage practice in Houston (by Yelp.com, Google, TripAdvisor etc.)
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are excited to continue to grow our dependent on our business needs. This could look like extended hours or additional services. We just relocated to Durham in 2013, so we will continue to fine tune this space for a while.
