Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Levitt.
Alice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started writing professionally at age 13 with a cult film ‘zine that I distributed internationally. I wrote for WWE Magazine before becoming a full-time food writer in 2008. I came to Houston in 2015 as dining editor at Houstonia. I left Houstonia to go freelance and write a book in March of 2018.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I was 15, I became bedridden with neuro-Lyme disease. Over seven years, I had to relearn to walk, talk, sit up and read. My mother told me at the time that she could either afford for me to get better or go to college, so my official education stopped in 10th grade. Before that, I had wanted to be a medical historian or surgeon. Once that was no longer an option, I went back to what I knew: writing. I guess the lesson is adaptability. Now I’m writing more about medicine, allowing me to explore that passion professionally, too.
Please tell us about your business.
I’ve been known for more than a decade now for my willingness to eat anything. While I think my best work involves exposing my readers to different cultures and traditions through foods from around the world, I’m also perfectly happy writing about my first (and probably last) time eating at Chik-fil-A.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Don’t be afraid to humble yourself when you’re learning. Even though I’d already been writing professionally since I was 13, I started my food career with two internships. One led to my job at Seven Days, where I ended up running the food section in just a few years.
