Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Roberts.
Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
An undying passion is what led to Melissa Roberts Interiors and all things design. I owe the beginning of my career as an interior designer to my husband. He knew my passion and consistently encouraged me to chase my dreams. With an aunt who is also an interior designer, a dad who builds custom homes, and a mom who previously owned a flooring showroom I guess you could say it is in my blood to be in this industry. I studied nursing in college with the ambition to help others and with job security in mind. As a registered nurse I had a love for all things design related but knew the tough market that came with it. My husband believed in me and my capabilities, thank you, Nick!
In late 2016, I started Melissa Roberts Interiors and never looked back. Running a successful interior design business was something I wanted but wasn’t sure I was capable of doing. Over the past year and a half, I have also begun working as an influencer. While this is a work in progress, I am enjoying the journey! It has taken a lot of dedication and hard work, but it’s true that you can do anything you put your mind to. Believing in myself is not something that comes naturally. It’s a daily struggle but with supportive friends and family around me I know I can do this. This is only the beginning for MRI!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Comparison is my biggest challenge. Both, the interior design and the influencer community thrive off each other. So much so, that sometimes, I fall victim to constant comparison with my fellow peers. When this happens, I take a step back allowing myself to refocus on my goals and the big picture. To ladies just beginning in their journey, it’s imperative that you believe in yourself and your capabilities. It’s crucial that we surround ourselves with people who want to see us succeed while pursuing our dreams.
What should we know about Melissa Roberts Interiors? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Melissa Roberts Interiors naturally started as a woman with a deep passion for the design world. I specialize in personalized, residential design that’s both affordable and achievable. Over time, MRI has evolved into a brand from not only interior design services but also as an influencer via social media and blogging. It’s been an incredibly humbling and rewarding experience to receive this amount of recognition in a relatively short amount of time. The magazine features, awards, and TV spotlight are fantastic but are truly secondary to the responses my clients share once a project is revealed! My clients genuinely are one of a kind. We get so close throughout the process that some of us become close friends! As a brand, I set myself apart from other businesses by offering personalized concierge. I accomplish this by providing one on one services with every client. It is my goal to keep MRI successful by providing unrivaled customer service.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Fortunately, in the interior designer community, there is a genuine connection that offers an empowering sense of togetherness. We support one another which in turn allows us to learn from others along the way. This industry, as well as the influencer market, are both very supportive of boss babes! The only barriers I see in these industries are self-inflicted. As a female leader, I set my limits by creating my schedule and rates, which allows me to be both a successful leader as well as a dedicated wife and mom.
