Meet Lupe Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lupe Hernandez.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
When my birthday came around the age of 14 my Dad asked me what I wanted as a gift. I was already selling small scale drawing at school and wanted to expand to larger format. I asked for an airbrush and though it was more than my Dad could afford he granted me my wish. Before I knew it, I had cars lined up on my front yard to get paintings airbrushed on hoods, doors, tailgates, etc. Dad was impressed of course and from then on kept pushing me forward with my self-learning.

Please tell us about your art.
My art style revolves around cubism, geometric abstraction and graffiti. My compositions flow from religious art in cubism style that are generated based on my cultural upbringing as a Christian to figurative elements into which I incorporate graffiti. My brothers and I grew up looking at trains and studying the lettering styles. My work is full of nostalgia, maybe as a means to hold on to days gone by. My work is carefully crafted using complimentary colors and or gradients in monochromatic tones. The colorful work is simple and meant to cheer the audience and they move from one end to the other finding hidden words. The monochromatic work is usually created in cubism allowing the eyes to rest and travel in slow motion appreciating every section as in a meditative mode.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
A big challenge for me is balancing my time. I’m fortunate to work on commissions as well as work part time teaching art, which of course generates a flow of income. Although my work revolves around the arts, I have small amounts of time to work on personal exhibits.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I participate in group exhibitions in the Rio Grande Region around the McAllen Tx area. I also have rotating work at Innovations Art Gallery and have shown at the 409 Gallery in Brownsville and The Square Gallery in Goliad, Texas. Most of my work can be viewed on my Instagram page @mr._three_d as well as on Facebook @Mr. Three D and @Lupe Hernandez.
