Meet John Angerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Angerson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started my career in the early 1990’s, covering the fall of the Berlin Wall and the changing geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe shooting photographs for newspapers and magazines. I main focus in the last few years has been on my long-term personal projects, that are often exhibited at major art institutions in the UK and overseas.

My last monograph – Love, Power, Sacrifice (published by Dewi Lewis, Manchester) documented the Jesus Army over a twenty-year period and peers into a microcosm of fanatical religion. I now split my time between shooting personal work, holding University lectures with workshops and shooting features and portraiture for the Saturday & Sunday Times magazines.

Please tell us about your art.
My work explores and uses different languages of documentary photography, focusing on how specific communities form, shift and develop. I also try and give the viewer an oblique view on our world particularly in some of my English Landscape work; that questions and disrupts our notion of what a ‘beautiful’ landscape can be.

Later in 2018. I will be publishing my second monograph: ‘English Journey’.

To celebrate 85 years since the publication of English Journey by the author JB Priestley I have retraced his steps over a period of 3 years. English Journey has become a benchmark for writers, social historians George Orwell’s ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’ and much of the work of photographer Bill Brandt bear its influence. My contemporary travelogue embraces the spirit of the book from its original subtitle: ‘Being a rambling but truthful account of what one man saw and heard and felt and thought during a journey through England’. Please get in touch if you wish to pre-order a copy of the book.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Quite simply, it’s the age-old issue for all Artists and Photographers it’s way to get Funding! “When bankers get together for dinner, they discuss Art. When artists get together for dinner, they discuss Money”

― Oscar Wilde
